Yesterday, the museum was filled with the delightful aroma of freshly baked bread, cinnamon rolls, and an array of other delectable treats.

Thank you, Penny, for sharing your expertise and teaching the Best Bread Workshop. Witnessing the diverse applications of your recipe in creating pepperoni rolls, dinner rolls, pizza, herb bread, sandwich bread, and even donuts was truly inspiring.

The entire audience was captivated by your culinary creations, and many of the students actively participated, crafting their own masterpieces to take home. Yet the highlight of the day was undoubtedly savoring your creations during lunch.

We want to make a directory of local long-arm quilters! Many times we are asked for the name and phone number of a local long-arm quilter to finish a quilt top. If you have a long arm and are willing to quilt for customers, please contact us at www.logcabinquilters.com. Let us know if you do edge-to-edge and/or custom quilting.

Need some Mother’s Day ideas? Consider making an appointment with her to spend a low-key day together.

Come explore the Levy Co Quilt Museum together. You could buy her a cozy throw, a handmade purse, or kitchen items that she selects from our gift items. Maybe she’d like a few hobby-related supplies like sewing patterns (50¢), quilting books ($1.00), or fat quarters ($1.00).

Or simply sit with her on the wide wrap-around porch. Sometimes, the best gifts are simply spending quality time together.

New to Quilting?

One of the easiest patterns to start with is a simple patchwork or rail fence design.

It’s an excellent way to practice cutting and piecing without feeling overwhelmed.

In the Log Cabin workshop, we discussed thread weight differences. The explanations provided below can assist other quilters in selecting the appropriate thread for their projects.

80 -100 wt (very fine)
Almost invisible
Used for appliqué, micro quilting, or bobbin thread
Great when you don’t want stitches to show

60 wt (fine)
Fine piecing and detailed work
Good for paper piecing or small seams

50 wt (standard sewing thread)
The most common quilting thread
Great for piecing and general sewing
Strong but not bulky (your “everyday” thread)

40 wt (slightly thicker)
Shows a bit more
Good for quilting when you want stitches to be visible

30 wt (medium-heavy)
Decorative quilting
Adds texture and definition
Often used for top stitching

12 wt (thick)
Very bold stitches
Hand quilting, big stitch quilting, or decorative work
Usually too thick for regular machine use (unless special setup)

Another System: TEX

Sometimes thread is labeled with TEX instead of weight.
TEX measures thickness directly
Higher TEX = thicker thread (this one goes the “normal” direction)

Example:
50 wt ≈ TEX 25
40 wt ≈ TEX 30
30 wt ≈ TEX 50

The Log Cabin SunBonnet Sue Workshop was an absolute blast! We had an incredible group of ladies with exceptional creative skills. Just take a look at these patriotic Sunbonnet Sue blocks—each one is unique and different. Everyone embraced the turned edge appliqué technique, knowing they can apply it to any appliqué they choose in the future. Well done, ladies!
