We are honored to present our next exhibition “Children of War,” featuring Art for post-trauma recovery of children of Ukraine.

Opening Saturday, December 17 at 12 noon
Exhibit from December 17 to February 12

Children in Ukraine were caught in the midst of missile attacks on civilian targets and the horrors of Russian occupation. While many were killed or kidnapped and taken by force to Russia, others were hiding in bomb shelters or escaped to the West. They witnessed the killing of their parents and siblings, and the horrors of war. Experiencing trauma, horror, loss of life, and loss of innocence, they developed post-traumatic stress that prevented them from communicating or feeling safe.

UIMA is proud to exhibit these children’s magnificent works and joins the efforts to help the children through this humanitarian crisis. These children are reaching out to us through their works as art is humanity's most essential, most universal language.

This exhibition presents works by four Chicago artists with a focus on paintings: Cindy Bernhard, Ellen Greene, Ann Toebbe, and Gwendolyn Zabicki. As the exhibition title suggests, the show's premise is about the artist's exploration of the layered emotional resonance of the concept of home. We have been living in a pandemic when most people have spent an unusually long time in their homes.Conversely, around the world, refugees have been forced to leave their homes, some with the hope of returning and others seeking a new life and home. We are asking the question; what does home mean? Is it a familiarity with the environment, or is home just an abstract place in our minds?

The Artist Talk was moderated by Alexandra Senycia.

We are thrilled to announce our next exhibition: “Resist!: A Visual History of Protest,” opening on December 17th, 2022.

Exhibit of acclaimed Chicago artist, Franklin McMahon’s fifty years of protest in vibrant drawings and paintings. In the 1940s, McMahon was a cartoonist depicting conditions in WWII POW camps. He mailed his drawings back to Extensions Magazine in Chicago. In 1955 McMahon covered the Emmett Till Trial for Life Magazine in Sumner, Mississippi that transformed him into an artist-reporter. The 1960’s began with him drawing the construction of the Berlin Wall and continued with his art coverage of Dr. Martin Luther King’s peaceful protests, including the march from Montgomery to Selma across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Chicago Eight Conspiracy Trial. Five decades of social change are documented in his brilliantly painted graphite on paper images through to 2008 when Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton debated. In capturing historic events through art or major publications from the Chicago press to national publications McMahon chronicled current events that nudged society in a more just direction.

On view from Dec. 17, 2022- 12 February, 2023
Curated by Margot McMahon, daughter of Frank McMahon

Today on , we’re looking back to our 2013 exhibition “Artists Respond to Genocide.”

Between 1932-1933, 6-10 million Ukrainians were deliberately starved to death by the Soviet Union’s government as an attack against Ukrainian culture and its people. Even though this genocide was nearly 90 years ago, this attack continues to this day in Ukraine. The Holodomor was hidden from the world and its existence is still denied.

TOMORROW: Ukraine, My Love 💛

Please consider supporting UIMA's efforts by making a donation. Any amount is appreciated.

Over the past year, everyone including UIMA, has been affected by the war in Ukraine. Since February, the Institute has shifted focus to providing mutual humanitarian aid through fundraising and educational initiations, while still honoring our core mission of bridging cultural diversity through artistic expression.

To maximize the fundraising efforts we've been functioning off of our operational reserve funds as a result of our Ukrainian aid efforts. We are asking for your help now, to support us as we venture into the new year and hope to continue serving the Ukrainian community.
