We are thrilled to announce our next exhibition: "Abstraction as Metaphor" featuring works by Corey Postiglione and Kathie Shaw opening this Saturday, April 24th.

Painting, including abstraction, has probably been around too long to hold surprises, at least in the area of pictorial innovation, which was its hallmark historically. This could be regarded as the current challenge for abstraction in particular. Whereas painting continues unabated with no signs of disappearing, the question remains how to make it vital, not only in terms of pictorial seduction, but also in the area of content. This is one of the particular dilemmas for abstraction.

Corey Postiglione and Kathie Shaw have been fortunate to share a studio, where they interact around ideas, techniques and motivations. Although different stylistically, the consequence of a shared space are essential to both artists.

Today, we're taking a look back at our 2018 exhibition "Contemporary Ukrainian Graphics at the Turn of the XX/XXI Century." The exhibit highlighted the progress, innovation and character shaping graphic art over the last 40 years. Featuring the work of 32 of the country's most acclaimed artists, the exhibition focuses primarily on the three major graphic centers of Kyiv, Lviv and Kharkiv, as well as paying heed to smaller communities of graphic production.

We are proud to unveil our new 50th anniversary logo!

“2021 marks the 50th anniversary celebration of UIMA. If the Institute had a voice and could recollect those 50 years, it would chronicle all the extraordinary art exhibits that graced its walls, it would describe the many concerts that filled its galleries with musical interludes, it would relay the eloquence of the written word of authors. If the Institute had a voice, it would reflect on how many supporters were integral in those five decades with their resolute vision, strong drive and abiding volunteerism.

As part of the 50th anniversary celebration, it will be our honor to share with you the UIMA legacy through photos, excerpts, memories and reflections.
Today, we embark on our reflective journey to the past by presenting our UIMA 50th Anniversary logo.

As we launch our 50th Anniversary celebration, we thank you for your support and commitment to UIMA through the years. We would not be celebrating this monumental anniversary without you.”

This week we're looking back to our 2015 exhibition, “Hard Heads, Sweet Knees, Forked Tongues,” which featured paintings and works on paper by Art Paul, the first art director of Pl***oy magazine and the designer of the iconic Pl***oy bunny logo. This was the first time his non-commercial works were exhibited, and this was one of our most popular exhibitions. As a whole, the artwork refers to his personal values, satirical observation, and social commentary that is at times serious but streaked with humor.

Join us for two exhibitions opening this weekend: “Not Afraid,” featuring works by Janice Elkins and Gina Lee Robbins and “Work, People, Art,” in partnership with Illinois State Museum.

We're thrilled that an exhibition of truly important work will be featured alongside Janice Elkins and Gina Lee Robbins' NOT AFRAID at Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA) this weekend.

Work, People, Art: Selections from the WPA Collection of the Illinois State Museum will also be opening this weekend in UIMA's East Gallery. The exhibition features 38 paintings, prints, and photographs made under the Federal Art Project (FAP) from the Illinois State Museum’s permanent collection.

During the Great Depression (1929-1939), the Federal Art Project (FAP) supported out-of-work artists by providing commissions and relief programs. These efforts sought to restore America’s prosperity and hope at a time when over 20% of the American workforce was unemployed. The program employed more than five thousand artists in various art projects throughout the United States.

The FAP empowered artists to develop a diverse American aesthetic and bridged the gap between art and the American
public by providing greater access to art through public art, art centers, and exhibitions. The project encouraged artists to portray the hopes and hardships of American life, giving voice and inspiration to a struggling nation during one of its darkest periods.

Don't miss this opportunity to see these important works in person. Opening: February 20-21 12-4pm. Secure reservations to opening for both exhibitions here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/opening-weekend-not-afraid-work-people-art-tickets-139978436271

Both NOT AFRAID and Work, People, Art run through April 18 at Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art.
