Forgotten Forms opens TOMORROW as a part of #InheritChicago

This Friday, visit the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art for the opening reception of Forgotten Forms, a collaborative exhibition with The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture.

This event investigates seemingly everyday objects to reveal a much greater story about neighborhood identity, place-making and city life. In addition, this exhibition highlights the work of two emerging artists, both of whom explore structural elements of urban landscapes.

Edra Soto revisits Puerto Rico’s vernacular architecture through her GRAFT installations and architectural interventions, and Yhelena Hall touches on the history of Chicago and explores a marginal state of detritus becoming artifacts through her series Polished Remnants.

FEATURE FRIDAY!

Gillian Wise (b. 1936), an artist dedicated to the application of concepts of rationality and aesthetic order to abstract paintings and reliefs, spent her initial years of study at Wimbledon School of Art. Her interest in Constructivist art was initiated by an acquaintance with the work of Biederman which, in turn, led to a contact with the British Constructionists.

Visit us this weekend and experience this artwork for yourself in UIMA's permanent collection!

The First Lions film

We say farewell to a legendary Chicago architect Stanley Tigerman, who passed away this Monday at the age of 88. His genius lives on in many Chicago landmarks, including our distinguished curvy facade, designed by Mr. Tigerman and completed in 1978.

Stanley Tigerman was the architect of the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art. This is an excerpt from the feature documentary The First Lions film reminiscing about his time with the Institute and the impact he left on the community. Rest in peace Stanley Tigerman.
