The first episode was great and now we can’t wait for the next one! This is what they have to say about it ...
Synth History: E01 - Wendy Carlos
Well, after months of research, recording and editing - Synth History E01 on Wendy Carlos is out.
Wendy Carlos is a musician and composer, best known for her electronic renditions of classical music and film scores (A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Tron). She paved the way for synthesizers with her 1968 Grammy award winning record Switched-on-Bach. She was also one of the first openly trans musicians. A pioneer in more ways than one, in Synth History’s first podcast episode we recount Wendy's impressive history and contributions to the world of synthesizers and music in general.
Lots of hours were spent on this episode and I truly hope you enjoy it. Available now on @spotify , @apple Podcasts, @stitcherpodcasts (and more soon). A full transcript with references is available on Synth History’s website.
If you enjoy it make sure to subscribe, leave a nice review and share with your friends!
Thanks,
Synth History

Roland Juno-6 & Juno-60 [1982]
According to Vintage Synth Explorer and Enmore Audio, both the Juno-6 and Juno-60 sound almost identical!
The first from Roland's Juno series, the Juno-6 was released in February of 1982. It was the first of the polyphonic synthesizers to be sold for under $2000 (that is equivalent to about $5,342.94 in 2020).
Essentially an analog synthesizer with digitally controlled oscillators, the Juno-6 lacked MIDI control and more importantly patch memory storage.
At the same time, Roland was losing market share in competition against Korg’s Polysix. The Polysix was around the same price range but featured programmable patch memory, and well, Roland needed to tweak the Juno-6.
Roland ceased production just a few months later in August, and the next generation Juno-60 was born in September. Roland added 56 patches of memory storage to the Juno-60.
The Juno-60 is considerably more popular than the Juno-6. Most notably being used on hits like Pet Shop Boys’ “West End Girls”, A-Ha’s “Take on Me” and Duran Duran’s “Save a Prayer”.

The main synths that Kevin Parker from @tameimpala used on Currents are the Roland Juno-106 and the Roland JV-1080, two very different synths from different eras. The Juno-106 is a beautiful 80s synth, with a lush, chorused sound. The JV-1080 is more of a 90s digital synth, capable of producing a variety of realistic patches.
Check out this ‘Synth Sounds’ video from @reverbmachine
The track ‘Nangs’ was recreated using the TAL U-NO-LX, which is a software emulation of the popular Juno 6/60/106. Getting familiar with this plugin’s user interface is a great way to learn how to use the Roland Juno-6 & 106 before visiting. The plugin is compatible with all major DAWs and there is also a great iPad app as well!

Synth House Chicago (SH312 Museum) is a space dedicated to electronic musicians and sound designers. We are a shared workspace located inside Music Garage Chicago housing a collection of high end electronic music instruments that are available for our guests to use. Think of us as an interactive museum fused with a self-guided music studio. The idea is that you book a workstation, bring your own recording gear, and work in headphones. The museum has a total capacity of 5 Workstations (5 bookings per Session).
Whatever you record, is yours to use.
OPEN JULY - AUGUST 2020
Museum Sessions: Museum Sessions are fixed at 3 hours and the museum will have 3 sessions each day (morning, afternoon and evening). Museum Sessions cost $35. Booking a workstation grants you (+1 GUEST) exclusive access to that workstation for the reserved Museum Session. Think of a Museum Session as one 3-hour self-guided class/time slot.
Want to try other workstations during your Museum Session? No worries - you and your guest are welcome to move to another UNOCCUPIED workstation at any time. You and your guest may ONLY OCCUPY ONE WORKSTATION PER BOOKING. Reserve more than one workstation to combine gear.
