Within our expansion, we've reimagined the Henry Darger Room and added an interpretive exhibition, which will explore the art and life of the iconic Chicago self-taught artist over two floors.

But who is Henry Darger?

Henry Darger was Chicago’s most famous self-taught artist. In his one-room Licoln Park apartment that doubled as his studio for close to 40 years, Darger worked on a large number of painted and collaged works, created volumes of writings, and collected hundreds of objects. In 2000, Intuit took possession of the contents of Henry Darger’s living and working space and created the permanent Henry Darger Room Collection. In our newly renovated space, you will be able to view a selection of his works and installation of his apartment with authentic tracings, newspapers, magazines, personal documents, architectural elements, fixtures, and furnishings from Darger’s original room.

We are starting the week off with Kevin Sampson’s “Port Wine Stains” selected by Christina, our Chief Registrar and Assistant Curator. Sampson's mixed media sculptures are made from reworked and transformed found objects including cement, bones, tiles, fabric and various painting mediums including acrylics, oils and stains. Memory is an ongoing theme explored throughout his practice. Sampson's sculptures hold the memories contained within the discarded objects he uses to assemble his works and act as memorials that are sometimes temporary and fleeting.

We are back in the New Year with an intricate staff pick from Claire, our Development Director. She chose “Untitled” by Emery Blagdon, which was featured in the exhibition "Trauma and Loss, Reflection and Hope: Selections from the Collection" at Intuit in 2021. Inspired by the healing potential of natural materials, Blagdon created a constantly changing installation of paintings and sculptures in a shed on his Nebraska farm known as "The Healing Machine". Made of steel and copper, this assemblage was drawn from this site.

"Let’s Go Home" explores the concept of “home” through imagery portraying domestic spaces, loved ones, intimate objects, and homeland—representations that allude to feelings of comfort or familiarity. Guest-curated by Christina Stavros, chief registrar and assistant curator at Intuit, this exhibition features work by Jairo Granados-Cardenas, Wesley Willis, Marvin Young and more.

While Intuit’s Teacher Fellows are currently attending learning sessions to integrate outsider and self-taught art into their lesson plans, member Kathy Pilat shared a memory of introducing artist Mr. Imagination in person to her New Trier High School students.

“In 2000, I was Art Department Chair of New Trier High School and invited Mr. Imagination to our annual Visiting Artist program to present his work to the art students and do a hands-on project inspired by him. I was elated when he said he’d be happy to do it! He brought a bin of sandstone blocks and taught the students how to carve them into sculptures of their choosing. He was lively, upbeat, fun and kind to our students, staff and myself. I also participated, carving a couple of things, and I still have them as well as a piece he carved for me of my name and the year (“Kathy, 2000”). I was touched by his spirit and kindness, and I was grateful that he agreed to come to New Trier High School and travel the distance to do so.”

Revisit the cover of Intuit’s Winter 2022/2023 issue of The Outsider for a portrait of Mr. Imagination that was featured in Intuit’s 2023 exhibition Ted Degener: At Home with Artists. View here: https://www.art.org/the-outsider-magazine/

This week, join us in congratulating President and CEO Deb Kerr for ten years of leading Intuit! Since beginning her tenure in 2014, with Deb's passionate leadership, Intuit has demonstrated incredible growth and resilience. She has grown the museum's staff and board, increased the museum's revenue and championed efforts and initiatives that have heightened Intuit's profile in significant ways.

In 2025, Intuit will open a renovated and expanded museum with triple the programming space, a multimillion-dollar project that Deb stewarded. Thank you and happy 10-year anniversary, Deb!

Texas artist Consuelo “Chelo” González Amézcua (1903-1975) took inspiration from the traditional metalwork jewelry of her native Mexico when creating what she referred to as her “filigree drawings”.

Pulling from the Bible, pre-Colombian history and her own life, she created elaborate designs on paper or cardboard using ballpoint and, later, felt-tip pens. Amézcua would further embellish her black-and-white drawings, some of which took more than a month to complete, with red, blue and green ink and original poems.
