I love open kitchen counter service spots & .kitchen was such a great spot for lunch before heading out to read Tarot at Grand Garden a few doors down.

I've been out gathering supplies today at ye olde WasteShed () for a workshop with the Glenview Public Library () tomorrow!

We'll be cutting up only the most beautiful National Geographic magazines from the late 1960s to make our own Tarot cards!

This meditative workshop for folks aged teen to adult is gonna be great. I'm excited to teach on Tarot's history & design for a workshop where people will walk out with their own collage.

The Glenview Librarians have been very open to all my ideas for the workshop, and I'm excited to visit their dreamy public library.

We're calling it Journey Through Tarot.

Stay tuned for more adventures throughout the month! I hope ya'll are enjoying the finest of all months already. ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ–ค

I'm here to bribe you with a blueberry soy shake from OG veg/vegan dream . Boystown, Chicago's Chicago Diner (Meat free since 83!) is the first place I ever experienced a vegan reuben with thousand island, sauerkraut, & cheez on beautiful marble rye. They also have sweet potato fries! I'll be reading Tarot next to a giant plush Halloween spider this Sunday, Sept 29th, from 11am - 4 pm. ๐Ÿ•ท๐Ÿ•ธ๐Ÿ”ฎ

Hope you enjoyed the partial lunar eclipse & full moon in Pisces last night! If you didn't, tonight's now- waning-but-almost-full moon is a sight to behold.

Did you know that many witches observe the three days surrounding the full moon as the "week" of the full moon? So, there are 3 days of peak waxing, the full moon, and then 3 days of peak waning. That said, if you didn't get your moon workings in, fear not, there's always time to tune into the moon!

I don't know about you, but celestial bodies are getting me thru this Election Year. ๐Ÿคฎ it's grounding to look at something far older than the United States. ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ‘Œ

The Harvest Moon this month will also feature a partial eclipse! And it's a Supermoon!

My cover story for just landed!

Back at the tail end of February, I volunteered the putting up tents in Humboldt Park with my friend Natalie and 20 or so other volunteers. At the time, I thought I'd be writing a short article about The Orange Tent Project's critical work in providing sturdy tents to people living unhoused in Chicago for StreetWise, a street paper and social services center in Chicago.

After talking to people who are living at the tent encampment at Humboldt Park, I became curious about what necessary social services are provided at the park site. While permanent housing is essential for long-term survival, in the short term, a network of providers such as The Night Ministry, The Salvation Army, Thresholds, and other organizations provide hot meals, medical care, blankets, and other essentials to people who prefer living in the park to staying at an overcrowded shelter. This network of care is meticulously maintained through the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services and macro social work non-profit All Chicago.

Over the span of a few months of interviews and various drafts, this article has bloomed into a cover story & 6 page article for .

StreetWise Magazine is a street paper sold on Chicago city streets by vendors who have experienced homelessness and/or joblessness. Please visit your local StreetWise vendor today, if you live on Chicago! Most vendors sell the paper in Lakeview, Uptown, and the Loop. It will be on sale from now until July 9th, and the dual cover edition of this week's magazine has Nascar on the front cover, with my article taking the back cover. :)

If you want a copy of this paper, please feel free to DM me. I'm happy to send along an e-copy to you, too! All I ask is that you make a $3+ donation to StreetWise.

Special thanks to StreetWise editor Suzanne Hanney and everyone at StreetWise for their support.

Summertime vibes are building as we're only about a month out from the Summer Solstice -- the longest day of the year!

Find out what kind of summer you've been building up to a 3 card reading this Saturday, May 18th from 10am - 2pm at Necessary Coffee, Printer's Row. !

Also, I have a habit of reading any card(s) that jump out of the deck in a shuffle, if it happens -- at no added cost, sometimes the spirits wanna have their own say, too.

Visual artist & mystic will be there showing her paintings -- we'll go as summery and spooky as you wanna get. The native Floridian in me loves some good swamp witch humidity. ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ”ฎ๐Ÿค™

Here I am playing tourist at . Perhaps you've been to their coffee shop in Logan Square? I gotta say, I think I may like their Printer's Row location even more.

I'll be reading Tarot here on Saturday, May 18th from 10 am - 2 pm. If Mommy Dearest Day last Sunday made you exhausted, consider this your treat-yourself opportunity. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’

Smartly designed staggered furniture that allows you to sit whichever way you choose? Thank you. Sailor moon sodas? I couldn't resist. (It was hard to toss out the can.) Great art & local wares? Phew. Not to mention, who doesn't need a coffee on Saturday morning.

Absolute bonus: Legendary Chicago bookstore is on the same block? ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ“š Be still, my nerdy Tarot reader heart.

Also, if anyone can remind me of what this animal in the mural is called again, please comment below. ๐Ÿ™

Much love to my NYC friends for painting their town in memoriam. I don't have a personal Steve Albini story, but his presence is definitely in the air of every Chicago record shop & is in the polluted carp-filled water that we Chicagoans drink, along with the forever chemicals, birth control, and anti-depressants.

Praise be to Steve Albini for permanently melting my mind with In Utereo. Along with the heavy hitters, he was truly a man of the people at the mixer, recording so many local musicians over the years, with equal love for tiny acts to a 50 foot Queenie like PJ Harvey.

I went out to the Humboldt Park public library today & was stunned by the amount of offerings they had for the taking in the library's free seed library. ๐ŸŒฑ

Go check it out! I took the peas, but everything else is still there. They have a lot of seed packets of native plants available from the Field Museum. There was also a ton of literature on planting seasons and bad/good garden insects from . And it seemed like some neighbors dropped off a few of their own heirloom & organic seeds. Everything I saw seemed to be GMO-free!

This is perfect planting weather for sprouting your seeds, too. What a well-timed tiny but mighty section next to the library's HEPA filter. ๐ŸŒž

Something fun's in the works for mid June!

Arianna & I will be planning a book club this summer. We'll be reading a few books over a few months & meeting in Humboldt Park over a potluck picnic.

You're welcome to join in! We're still hashing out the nitty gritty details, so please stay tuned.

We'll be reading locally written books with socially focused bent for this series.

If there's anything you're particularly keen to read that is a non-fiction read, novel, or poetry book by a Chicago-based author, please feel free to DM us or email at space.oddities.chicago AT gmail.com

We have some ideas brewing, but we're also open to the power of suggestion! ๐ŸŒž

04/12/2024

Dear friends, what are you doing this Saturday at 6 pm? I'll be at DiscarDisco 's annual trash fashion show and fundraiser at the ever so posh Chicago Athletic Association (), which overlooks Millenium Park in the Loop.

I suggest that you join me, if you want to see some jaw dropping runway fashion looks made by local Chicago designers. There is some stiff competition brewing between designers this year, and all looks are made with upcycled reused materials. If you haven't bought a ticket, they still have a few general admission & VIP tickets left. Please check out their insta for more info! ๐ŸŒˆ

I love that the fashion designers participating in this show must create their runway look from a mystery box of materials from creative reuse center/art thrift store, The WasteShed. This really levels the playing field. While there are useful vintage fabrics in the box, they do stick a lot of weird whatsits in there, too. ๐Ÿคช

Judges (carefully chosen from Chicago's art and fashion scene) will pick their favorite look. As you can see from the 3 winning garments from last year -- shown on the flyer, there are so many different designers competing in this competition.

If competitive events give you hives like me, fear not. Really, this event is just a great excuse to come together to celebrate art, drink cocktails, get a photo, and support Humboldt Park non-profit, The WasteShed. (They also have a store in Evanston now, too, but we're partial to Humboldt.)

I went last year, and I had a great time. I'm happy to be headed back again for round 2.

Hope to see you on Saturday! ๐Ÿฅ‚

The eclipse is niiiiiiigh. Here's some info from on the time of the eclipse for folks who are in Chicago.

Hope you have your own celebrations for the eclipse planned, even if it may just be taking a 15 min break from work to step outside.

Chicago will see 93.9% of the totality of the eclipse at 2:07 pm, which is still an A+ in eclipse visibility to me.

Witches, rejoice! I hope you make the most of this new, new moon for bringing magic to your practices & loved ones. ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒš

I wanted to start off this post with a thank you to Downs, who manages the Boystown & their fantastic staff for inviting me & other local artists to the Spring Artists Market two weekends ago.

Unknown to me, took a set of very journalistic photos documenting the end of the day readings.

What is a Tarot reading? More specifically, what is Tarot reading at a pop up art market? It's not therapy. But it is a good chance to have a conversation with a stranger about life and your future, which should not be undervalued. It's an experience that you can squeeze in for 20 or 30 minutes in between browsing some art or meeting a friend for lunch. These 20 minutes of taking a load off can feel really expansive. Have you ever seen the Jim Jarmusch movie Coffee & Ci******es? I think of how these small experiences can take up some huge emotional space.

A pop up Tarot reading presents an incubator space where you are encouraged to lower your guard and bounce ideas around. Where do you want to go next? Where are you already going next, anyway? Sometimes you are the one driving your experience & sometimes you're a passenger on a larger ride. The more I read Tarot in community settings, the more I understand how the web of collective experiences makes up our individual choices.

The cards are a starting point for this larger discussion. Sure, they're pretty, but they're just paper cards. They're a diving board for going past their more standardized meanings, they're a gateway for the conversation you can have.

I don't read Tarot much for myself anymore, I prefer to get my readings from friends or other professionals where I can bounce my ideas around to other people, and they can surprise me with a different perspective in this shared exercise. If there is magic in a reading, it's often just this connection.

Want a reading? My books are open & I'll be filling my calendar with more events this summer, starting in May. Look me up! Or someone like me. I believe in Tarot readings. Human experience is something that happens offline. It's something you can smell, taste, touch. ๐ŸŒˆ
