Rudderless Designs is a design studio in Chicago, Illinois specializing in screen printed gig posters and art prints.

“Mike Schwindenhammer (aka Rudderless Designs) is from the Midwest. He likes hot dogs. Artist bios are probably supposed to be a little more informative, but this is probably all you really need to know to understand both me and my screen printed gig posters and art prints.”

Chicago Gang Business Cards from the 1970s & 1980s
Author: Thee Almighty & Insane Books
3rd Printing | Clothbound
96-Full Color Pages
Size: 5.5” x 8.25”
After many requests over the years, it’s back! This new edition once again includes a selection of Chicago gang compliment cards but with a handful of swap outs from the original, and is now ordered geographically (more or less) winding from south to north to reflect both the fundamental link of these organizations with physical locations and their interactions with others nearby. The essay has also been updated to reflect new information and perspectives introduced since the last edition was published.

From the Author: Thee Almighty & Insane: Chicago Gang Business Cards from the 1970s & 1980s by Brandon Johnson is an ode to an idiosyncratic print subculture that arose in Chicago just prior to the digital age when street gangs made business cards displaying their symbols, nicknames, territories, and enemies as a means to assert their pride, recruit new members, and serve as general tokens of affiliation. Less intended, but maybe more significant is the role of these cards as historical artifacts—not only documenting the specific histories of these gangs and their members, but also the larger social dynamics of a contentious time period in the city of Chicago. With enlarged reproductions of 70+ original and reprint cards and an introductory essay by collector Brandon Johnson, this book is an appreciation of Chicago gang “compliment cards”: their hand-drawn graphics, their blackletter typefaces, their outlandish names and clever slogans.

Letters To Chicago by Sir Charles

Paperback| 54 Pages | 6” x 9”

“After the limited hand-made first edition sold through a couple months back, we decided to print a more versatile second edition to keep this book alive and circulating. Generally, it is the same content but in a smaller format with a couple artwork updates. The digital printing allowed us to reproduce the lettering colors as Sir Charles originally conceived.

Sir Charles is a pseudonym born from the gang violence that began to plague not only the streets in his own neighborhood of Brighton Park, but also many other neighborhoods in Chicago. A drive-by shooting that occurred in 2015 at Shields Elementary School fueled his mission to combine Chicago gang lettering and culture with a personal twist of empowerment, forgiveness, and growth. This mission simultaneously documents personal struggles and battles with alcoholism and drug abuse as Sir Charles, or Life of a Busy Dad as he’s also known, started a new chapter as a sober father for his daughter that continues to this day. In this publication Sir Charles’s letters are paired with mid 20th century photographs from the archives of Chicago’s Urban Renewal Department. Documenting the process of identifying “blighted” buildings/neighborhoods, and targeting them for destruction/replacement, these photos preserve images of bygone structures in the oldest parts of the city. This initiative displaced many from their homes for the sake of municipal infrastructure projects, a new university campus, public housing, and private real estate developments. With a mind to contemporary parallels, Sir Charles’s letters, symbols, and messages float through this history as a disembodied voice while demonstrating a new lettering mode combining calligraphy with graffiti handstyles that is both deeply indebted to, and an integral product of, his native city of Chicago.”

"Ed Paschke is one of Chicago’s most renowned artists. Born and raised on the North Side, Paschke became interested in art at an early age, drawn by his father’s sketches and Disney animation.

After studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1960s, he exhibited with a handful of artists soon dubbed the Chicago Imagists, who were connected by their work’s highly finished surfaces and busy compositions. Paschke distinguished himself by using newspapers, posters and photographs as source material, as well as adding a social or political dimension to much of his work.

Paschke's career had many different periods and styles. An excellent example from the 1990s is on permanent view on the second floor of the Harold Washington Library Center.

The Ed Paschke Art Center opened in the Northside neighborhood of Jefferson Park this past summer on June 22, which would’ve been Paschke’s 75th birthday. One of the first things we did was distribute a Paschke-inspired coloring book to CPL locations across the city. It’s been a big hit with kids and kids at heart!..."

From the Beautiful Losers Archives...For those less familiar, Beautiful Losers was a landmark traveling museum exhibition that originally opened in 2004, and traveled to museums globally through 2009. The exhibition broke attendance records at every venue and traveled for 5 years, a near unheard of feat for a large-scale museum exhibit. The project was so impactful, it inspired and was referenced by other street art focused museum exhibitions in future years. A critically acclaimed documentary film of the same name was produced about the artists and exhibition. Beautiful Losers focused on artists and creators that primarily came from the subcultural backgrounds of graffiti, skateboarding, and independent music during the 1990s and 2000s. However, a wide range of influences (from comics to surfing) also factored significantly into the exhibit. The project included a long line of heavy hitting creators including KAWS, Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Raymond Pettibon, Harmony Korine, Chris Johanson, Shepard Fairey, and many others. Over the years, the Beautiful Losers Archive produced many editions with the participating artists and amassed a vast collection of original works, and editions, as well as rare objects and artifacts.

From the Producer: "A new breed of crime-fighter now stalks the urban landscape: the anti-graffiti vigilante. These dedicated blight warriors stop at nothing to rid their neighborhoods and cities of street art, stickers, tags, and posters. Yet several of these vigilantes have become the very menace they set out to eliminate. In their relentless attempt to stamp out graffiti, they've turned to illegally and destructively painting other people's property. VIGILANTE VIGILANTE is the story of two filmmakers who set out to expose these mysterious characters and discover a battle of expression that stretches from the streets to academia."

After a decade-long hiatus, Queen Siouxsie has returned at last to the stage.
