IAC Council Member, Vicki Heyman Wishes the IAC a Happy 60th
Many thanks to our Council Member, Vicki Heyman, for this beautiful video message for our 60th birthday! We are so in appreciation to have you serve on our Council, Vicki!
Ms. Heyman served as an American cultural envoy in Ottawa, Canada under President Barack Obama from 2014 until 2017. Her leadership emphasized the importance of the Canada-US relationship through cross-border conversations and programs related to the arts, social innovation, and youth engagement. Today, she continues to work on strengthening the relationship between the two countries, serving as a board member of the Council for Canadian American Relations, an organization that promotes cross border arts and cultural exchanges and is a member of the Cultural Diplomacy Leadership Council at Meridian international in Washington DC.
Heyman’s most powerful work during her time in Ottawa involved partnering with US Embassy Ottawa and the State Department’s Art in Embassies program to launch the seminal Contemporary Conversations speaking series at the National Gallery of Canada, using art as a bridge to discuss challenging issues such as social justice, the environment, and identity.
In 2019, she, along with her husband, Amb. Bruce Heyman the former US Ambassador to Canada, published their highly-acclaimed book, The Art of Diplomacy. It is a personal and insightful call to action about one of the most important bilateral relationships in the world — Canada and the US — and why diplomacy matters now more than ever before.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker Message to the Illinois Arts Council 60th Year
Hello everyone. This is Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and I'm excited to celebrate sixty years of the Illinois Arts Council. The arts play a vital role in shaping and enriching our lives. Art reflects human emotions and exposes us to the world. It connects diverse cultures and backgrounds. It can evoke anger, sorrow, and joy. It's a medium for communicating with one another, with the potential to unify and bring peace. Government support for the arts is vital to building a more cohesive society. It creates increased opportunities for open expression in our communities and it supports economic growth and jobs. And above all, we see the importance of embracing cultural diversity, something we pride ourselves on here in Illinois. I want to commend the Illinois Arts Council for its incredible work for making funding and resources available to students, emerging and professional artists and non-profit partners all across Illinois. Here's to sixty years and many more of keeping our arts sector vital, vibrant and accessible to all.
