"The full title of this work is originally in German: “Wenn du gehen musst willst du doch auch bleiben.” It is a sentence from Röder’s nine-year-old nephew, Luis…The sentence means, roughly, “When you need to leave, but you still want to stay.” It was a very poetic sentiment that fit the series so nicely: They wanted to stay in the house as long as they could, but they knew, in the end, it was impossible."

— Alexander Strecker, PhD Candidate at Duke University

Luisa Dörr’s work, featured in LUMA’s “Flash Forward: Luisa Dörr; Jan Hoek, Duran Lantink, and SistaazHood; Nina Röder; Nichole Sobecki” exhibition, will be on view beginning February 12.

“Sobecki started with the people, and to tell their complicated story, she employs many tactics: deep photo essays, humanizing portraits, a short film, and historical archives. The narrative unfolds as you sit with this work and begin to understand. And in the understanding comes some measure of despair dotted here and there with hope.”

—Peter DiCampo, Photographer, Cofounder, The Everyday Projects

Nichole Sobecki’s work, featured in LUMA’s “Flash Forward: Luisa Dörr; Jan Hoek, Duran Lantink, and SistaazHood; Nina Röder; Nichole Sobecki” exhibition, will be available to view beginning February 12.

“The images are an exercise in radical inclusion, a sustained collaboration involving Hoek, fashion designer Duran Lantink and the women of the Sistaazhood, a collective of more than 40 transgender sex workers living on the streets of Cape Town. The project, which mixes staged fashion portraits with documentary imagery, moves beyond the act of witness. They are not subjects, but “supermodels” and “muses” in Hoek’s words.”

“Dörr’s approach to visual storytelling allows the viewer to travel alongside Maysa on her personal journey, as she grows from young girl to stunning beauty, eventually winning the Young Miss Sao Paolo Black Beauty contest. While the photographer has chosen to stay away from representing the starker experiences of racism, Dörr’s nuanced emphasis on light, texture and touch allows the viewer an intimate glimpse into Maysa’s world and who she is as a human being.”
— Erin Elder, Senior Manager, Globe Alliance
