"The full title of this work is originally in German: “Wenn du gehen musst willst du doch auch bleiben.” It is a sentence from Röder’s nine-year-old nephew, Luis…The sentence means, roughly, “When you need to leave, but you still want to stay.” It was a very poetic sentiment that fit the series so nicely: They wanted to stay in the house as long as they could, but they knew, in the end, it was impossible."

— Alexander Strecker, PhD Candidate at Duke University

Luisa Dörr’s work, featured in LUMA’s “Flash Forward: Luisa Dörr; Jan Hoek, Duran Lantink, and SistaazHood; Nina Röder; Nichole Sobecki” exhibition, will be on view beginning February 12.

“Sobecki started with the people, and to tell their complicated story, she employs many tactics: deep photo essays, humanizing portraits, a short film, and historical archives. The narrative unfolds as you sit with this work and begin to understand. And in the understanding comes some measure of despair dotted here and there with hope.”

—Peter DiCampo, Photographer, Cofounder, The Everyday Projects

Nichole Sobecki’s work, featured in LUMA’s “Flash Forward: Luisa Dörr; Jan Hoek, Duran Lantink, and SistaazHood; Nina Röder; Nichole Sobecki” exhibition, will be available to view beginning February 12.
