Goldfinch

Goldfinch Goldfinch is a commercial gallery in Chicago focusing on the work of emerging and mid-career artists. Located in an 880 square foot ground floor space in E.

Goldfinch is an independent project space that seeks to provide a physical, conceptual, and discursive framework for contemporary visual practices through exhibitions, artists’ talks, informal salon discussions, and the written word. Garfield Park, we are embedded within a large warehouse housing numerous artists’ studios. In keeping with this context, we strive to bring an experimental, un-branded, and laboratory-like sensibility to our exhibition program.

12/22/2023

Goldfinch Wishes you a Peaceful & Restorative Holiday Season!

The gallery is closed until January 14, 2024. We will reopen on 1/14 with solo exhibitions by G.E. Liu (Gallery 1) and Jaclyn Mednicov (Gallery 2).

Today/Friday and tomorrow/Saturday are the LAST TWO DAYS to see .f.d. 's exquisite solo exhibition "y luego bailaron / and then we danced" -- it's been such a pleasure to highlight works on a teeny tiny scale (although just as many are "regular-sized") and we are grateful to Jeff Robinson for creating a shelving unit that really allows these individualistic little sculptures to interact and "dance" together. Gallery hours are 12-4pm today and tomorrow - if you haven't yet seen the show, please come by before we close for our holiday break!

Madeline Gallucci, on the trompe l'oeil blue tape in some of these paintings: "The tape explores the immediacy of the paintings’ surfaces, and how something provisional can be permanent. The blue tape has an association with many types of labor, including studio and house painting, that I am attracted to. I think about these tape marks alongside other bits of accumulation; the action of posting an “out of order” notice, a demarcation of an edge, an X on a pane of glass to prevent it from breaking. I find that bringing in the painted blue tape commands and contributes to the flatness that I'm interested in generating on the surface of the painting, and it directly references its own action."

"It is this possibility of recognition, of looking so closely that you find an inkling of yourself, an inkling of the unexpected, that hangs upon the exhibition’s contours like a tinseled crown. Sound of my father singing features fifteen sizeable canvases, between two to four feet, with acrylics and oils born of colors that flash upon the insides of eyelids and strike through chlorinated water like diamond blades. Faint auras of mirror edges, coupe glasses, and pool depths haunt the show; with colored painter’s tape guiding the eye, and adding texture, to focal points that disappear in smoke and fog." -- Annette LePique, review of 's "sound of my father singing" in .chicago

A huge and grateful thank you to writer Annette LePique and Bridge Magazine for this absolutely lovely, insightful review of Madeline Gallucci's current exhibition "sound of my father singing." We especially appreciate Annette's discussion of melodrama films, which are an important influence on this body of paintings, as well as her nod to Bonnie Tyler's classic ballad "Total Eclipse of the Heart"!

"Living in different parts of the world throughout my life made my connection to Mexico stronger from an early age. I am constantly submerged into the cultural wealth of my roots, by its historical and artistic heritage. Artisanal and ancient processes have been an essential part of my journey as an artist; these have led me to expand my horizons to new cultures and traditions. For the past few years I have dedicated an in-depth investigation of ancient processes and the symbolisms that lie within them." -- Sofía Fernández Díaz

11/07/2023

Madeline Gallucci’s interest in the construct of the mirror began in part through her interest in filmic melodrama, specifically the ways in which mirrors, windows, glass and other types of reflective façades are deployed in the films of auteur directors like Douglas Sirk and Rainer Werner Fassbinder. These directors, the artist notes, “used the camera to compress space and construct points of interaction and personal discovery through reflective surfaces.” In Gallucci’s own paintings, the mirror provides a similar conceptual framework. Sometimes, the mirror appears as a frame for frenzied gestural mark-making activity; other times, the mirror’s mimetic qualities are suggested, but not explicitly depicted.

Swipe through to see some film stills from Sirk and Fassbinder melodramas alongside some of Madeline's paintings....

"Life Cycles" is a gorgeous group show curated by at that features a huge group of fantastic Chicago artists, including the amazing ! We feel so lucky that Iris's stunning wax sculptures were included in this exhibition -- especially because "Life Cycles presents an ideal conceptual proposition through which to view and consider Iris's works (and those of so many other great artists). The exhibition is on view at DPAM through February 11, 2024. Swipe through for more installation shots of Iris's works but go go go yourselves in person!!

"Life Cycles includes artworks from DePaul Art Museum's permanent collection in conversation with contemporary Chicago artists not yet represented in the museum's collection. This exhibition focuses on the processes and materials that structure and subtend life while also examining the life of art objects. In so doing, the time of life no longer has a linear structure, but comes into view as a marvelous tangle, where there is no beginning or end, where death is not the opposite of life, nor the truth or fulfillment of it."
