Goldfinch

Goldfinch Goldfinch is a commercial gallery in Chicago focusing on the work of emerging and mid-career artists. Located in an 880 square foot ground floor space in E.

Goldfinch is an independent project space that seeks to provide a physical, conceptual, and discursive framework for contemporary visual practices through exhibitions, artists’ talks, informal salon discussions, and the written word. Garfield Park, we are embedded within a large warehouse housing numerous artists’ studios. In keeping with this context, we strive to bring an experimental, un-branded, and laboratory-like sensibility to our exhibition program.

"Dusk at the Lake," 2024, is one of two striking paintings by Gwendolyn Zabicki available now via Artworks $2500 and Under sale, featuring a special selection of works by some of Platform's favorite artists. "Dusk at the Lake" offers cozy summer vibes via a moody view of three figures gathered around a small charcoal grill at dusk near Lake Michigan. a friend once asked me if i believed in love — a strange question but understandable after some drinks — i said yes. this painting is a proof. it started two years ago from a photo of us kissing (i would give anything to relive that moment, even just for a second) and went through many stages but never felt right, till now.

‘love lasts by not lasting,’ jack gilbert’s line has stayed with me and witnessed everything. what i believe is not the form of affection, but something deep down, the thing threading two persons together no matter how the relation changes. i believe in the changing as its eternity.

i sent pics of it to my mom — i never tell her titles or what my paintings are about — and she said it reminded her of playing hide and seek when she’s little, once looking up from a hole in the ground, wide open field, after harvest, stems and leaves sprawling, wind-dried, sky. who says it’s not the same feeling: a game, the pursuing and the pursued, heart racing loud in a fugitive quietude, and the almost unbearable but perhaps the most essential part of playing/loving — not knowing if you’ve found a shelter or set yourself a trap.

it’s all just about how the heart beats.

Now open! "The Visage of Time," an exquisite first solo show of paintings by Yifan Li in Gallery II, inspired by the Chicago-based Chinese artist's efforts to understand time, memory, and a concerted present through meditative mark-making. As with all the paintings we show, these need to be experienced in person, so if you are local please visit us during our Fri/Sat, 12-4pm gallery hours or make an advanced private appointment.

"In consecutive mark-making, the vicissitude of time is reenacted, memory stirs -- be it a face, a dream, or a dissolved romance, I try to see it through, see beyond my sentiments, beyond transient particularities, and uncover its bare existence, rid of temporal contingencies." -- Yifan Li

Now open, with gallery hours today/Friday 12-4 and tomorrow/Saturday 12-4pm -- Gwendolyn Zabicki's gallery I solo show "Enrobed," which features new and recent paintings inspired by the artist's observations of "things covered by other things." Come by the gallery to view these paintings in person!

"“I think it was 2008 or 2009 that I noticed that everything at the grocery store was "enrobed" in chocolate. Not "dipped" or "dunked" or simply "covered" anymore, now everything had this great, fanciful word attached to it. Enrobed. The word just stuck around in my mind for a while. What else was enrobed and why?"--Gwendolyn Zabicki

The American Musicological Society is proud to present an unforgettable performance & lecture by Chicago musician/artist Damon Locks. As the leader of the critically acclaimed Black Monument Ensemble. At this event, Locks will explore how his studies of 1970s Afrofuturist styles influences his music, art, and philosophy. He will share his results from research in the archives of Sun Ra and other legendary Black American musicians and demonstrate how he recreates their performance styles, costumes, and sounds in his music and art. Throughout the evening, members of Black Monument Ensemble will perform both old-favorites and new works. Join us at the Rubloff Auditorium at the Art Institute of Chicago for this special opportunity to hear about Locks’ method and enjoy his music!

Thank you Block Club Chicago and writer Leen Yassine for this wonderful article and preview of Gwendolyn Zabicki's Gallery I solo show "Enrobed," opening this coming Sunday November 10th from 2-5pm! Read on for more information about the exhibition, some sneek peeks at some of the paintings in the show, and a conversation with Gwendolyn about her inspiration for the imagery in this body of work and her approach to her painting practice as a whole.

Gwendolyn Zabicki’s work takes inspiration from chocolate-covered snacks and other "fanciful and decadent" things. Her exhibit opens Sunday at Goldfinch Gallery in East Garfield Park.
