Hours of our sites: Visit our library at Historical Trinity Church Monday-Friday 10am-4pm; Magnolia Grange and the museum and old jail (Tuesday through Friday from 10-4 and Saturday from 10-2. M.G. $5 for adults $4 for seniors $3 children up to 17 under 3 free; museum donations appreciated).

Last Saturday, Feb. 15, Scarlett Heinbuch presented her program "Midlothian Coal Mining History: Slavery, Tragedy and the Human Spirit" at Magnolia Grange House Museum. Spittoon
A receptacle made for spitting into, especially by users of chewing to***co. It is also known as a cuspidor (which is the Portuguese word for “spitter” or “spittoon,” from the verb “cuspir” meaning to spit.) Brass was the most common material used in manufacturing spittoons. They were a common feature of saloons, hotels, stores, banks and other establishments in the late 19th century.

FEBRUARY PHOTO OF THE MONTH
Bertha Britton (center) graduated in 1924 from St. Philip School of Nursing, Richmond Virginia. It was a segregated school that educated Black women to work at St. Philip Hospital. She was the first Black public health nurse to work for Chesterfield County, where she served for over 26 years. She conducted classes on nutrition, prenatal care, midwifery, and vaccinated children before they started school. Here she assists Dr. Earl C. Gates, director of the Health Department, at a “Well Baby Clinic.”
