Ahh! History

We can chart our future clearly and wisely only when we know the path which has led to the present.
~Adlai Stevenson

There is some debate whether Adlai Stevenson I or II actually said this quote. But what isn't debated is that the Stevensons and the Vroomans were family.

Adlai Stevenson I was the US Vice President to Grover Cleveland, a former Illinois Governor... and Julia Vrooman's uncle. Adlai and Matthew Scott (Julia's father), founded the McLean County Coal Company. And after her father's death, Adlai was the one who walked Julia down the aisle on her wedding day to Carl.

Adlai Stevenson II is actually the grandson of Adlai the first, was the 31st governor of Illinois, a two time democratic nominee for US president, served as the US Ambassador to the United Nations... and wrote for the family newspaper, The Pantagraph. (Some sources attribute this quote to Adlai II from a speech in Richmond, Virginia on the 20th of September. 1952)

Book your return stay at Vrooman Mansion and then head over to to the McLean County Museum of History to learn more about the Stevensons, the Vroomans and other central Illinois families that shaped our community.
