Washington County History Museum

Washington County History Museum Preserving and presenting the history of Washington County, Alabama - the first county of Alabama and the best! Current Museum Board Members:
Mr.

Washington County’s role in the history of Alabama and the United States is one of its most distinguishing features. The heritage of the county is one that is worthy of preservation! The need for a formal institution to preserve county history was recognized by a group of interested citizens, who approached the County Commission about allocating space in the new courthouse. Late in 1965, the Washi

ngton County Commission voted to designate a space for this very need. A few years later, the Washington County Museum opened to the public on the basement level of the present Courthouse. For the first 28 years, the Museum was run by a group of dedicated volunteers who worked together in their common interest. In 1993, a formal organization, WASHINGTON COUNTY MUSEUM ASSOCIATION, was created. Its Board of Directors is now entrusted with the care and progress of the Museum. Wayne Blackwell, Chairman
