The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia

We had a lovely time last Thursday, painting, sipping, chatting, and noshing! Inspired by the artist Frida Kahlo, Fralin educators set up beautiful still-lifes of flowers and fruit, and instructed participants in the use of gouache and crayon to create colorful works of art. 🌺🍍🍊🖼️
This Art Together event was part of the collaboration between The Fralin, the Virginia Theater Festival, and The Paramount Theater, celebrating Frida Kahlo and VTF’s upcoming performance of “Frida-A Self Portrait” (July 23-26). Virginia Theatre Festival

Two weeks ago we kicked off our new Fralin Visionaries, art crowd-sourcing program with the very first voting event! Members, made of up art enthusiasts and Alums who were in town for Reunions Weekend, gathered at the Virginia Guest House to mingle, while UVA Clubs across the country live-streamed the event for Visionaries who could not attend in person. Three works, which had been selected by Fralin curators, were presented to the group. After learning about the works, each person cast their vote for the work they wished the group to acquire.
And the winner is..."Some Theories About Private Property", by UVA alum, Rodney McMillian (slides 1 and 6). The other two works on the ballot were Georges Adéagbo’s “No. 300, No. 297 and No. 295” and Christine Sun Kim’s “Mind Rock.”

This summer we want to shout out to some of our amazing community partners. 😎
Today we are highlighting UVA Health. A few years ago we started working with Anne Brown, UVA Health’s Environmental Experience and Arts Program Manager, to host a drop-in art-making afternoon at the main hospital. It was a hit, and has now become a quarterly program. We bring the art supplies and set up a quiet space for any hospital staff or visitor to come and spend as much or as little time as they can, allowing them to just focus on being creative. We’ve heard from several clinicians and staffers, how much they enjoy and appreciate when we come—and many come back every time! We feel it’s the least we can do for these folks who give so much. 💙🧡 This is what “art together” means.

Flashback to last month when we celebrated our incredible students—interns, docents, Student Engagement Council members, and Gallery Educators. We say this every year, but we are truly so lucky to get to work with some of the best and brightest University of Virginia 🥹

We are in the final weeks of our current exhibitions. As we reflect on the last few months, we invited Charlottesville photographer and multi-disciplinary artist, Kori Price to share with us how Nakeya Brown’s exhibition, Refutations, resonated with her. Thank you, Kori for spending time in this exhibition and for sharing these personal connections. We hope this inspires you to come in for one last look before we close, May 31.
