In 1918 Paul G. McIntire gifted this land to the city to be used as a park. Before that, the land was part of a plantation.

Before the statue of Robert E. Lee stood at its center, this ground was tied to enslavers, Confederate mythology, Vinegar Hill, and the violent denial of Black freedom.

This Friday, the Swords into Plowshares feedback period closes. So far more than 750 people have weighed in on the proposed designs.

On July 10, 2026 — five years after Charlottesville removed the Lee statue — JSAAHC and SIP plan to announce the final design choice.

For this work is Afrofuturist work. A historian, preservationist, and native of Albemarle, Niya reminds us that power lives in narrative—and that preserving Black schools, churches, lodges, and communities is part of protecting people from erasure, displacement, and harm. Watch and read more of Niya’s reflections in the Swords into Plowshares: Recast | Reclaim exhibition up now at the JSAAHC through May 30.

The estimable Dr. Shelley Murphy () discussing the journey of tracing family trees with Star Reams and Robin Reaves Burke—both of whom have ancestors who were Black Patriots in the Revolutionary War. Their families also include Monacan ancestors as well as those enslaved at Monticello. These histories are very much alive, and with us.
