Step inside Beyond Boundaries: Black Abstraction in the Elliot and Kimberly Perry Art Collection — an exhibition that invites viewers into a world of layered textures, expansive color, gesture, rhythm, and material exploration.

Drawn from nearly three decades of collecting by Elliot and Kimberly Perry, the exhibition traces the evolution of their vision from figuration toward a deep engagement with Black abstraction and the many ways Black artists use abstraction to communicate memory, identity, history, emotion, and cultural knowledge beyond representation.

Through richly tactile surfaces, bold compositions, and immersive visual language, Beyond Boundaries challenges the idea that abstraction is disconnected from lived experience, instead revealing it as a powerful space for storytelling, experimentation, and Black creative expression.

Now on view.

Join us for the Post-Black Gallery Experience — an evening of art, conversation, and creative expression inspired by our newest exhibition, Beyond Boundaries.

Together, we’ll explore the layered ideas of post-blackness through a guided gallery tour before shifting from observer to creator during an intimate sketch session led by Dasia Hood. Choose a work that resonates with you, reflect on what it evokes, and translate your perspective into an expressive sketch of your own.

This is more than a gallery visit — it’s a space to gather, reflect, connect, and engage in meaningful dialogue through art.

What a night!

Last Friday, we celebrated our biggest cohort yet of 30 incredible students from Central Piedmont Early College during our EnVision Me Spring Student Film Showcase. Through powerful short documentaries, our students courageously shared their businesses, cultures, mentors, challenges, dreams, and stories that deserve to be seen and heard. Watching each student step into their voice and creativity reminded us exactly why this work matters.

A heartfelt thank you to our amazing partners, Mr. and Mrs. Groomes and the NBA Foundation, for believing in and investing in our youth, storytelling, and future leaders. We are beyond proud of this cohort and already excited for what next year will bring.

Moderator Spotlight ✨ Dr. Anita N. Bateman ✨

At the intersection of curatorial practice and cultural engagement, Dr. Anita N. Bateman continues to shape critical conversations around contemporary art, Black visual culture, and institutional storytelling.

As Vice President of Creative Direction at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture, Bateman leads the creative and strategic vision behind exhibitions, collections, educational programming, public engagement, and institutional partnerships — helping guide how audiences experience and connect with Black art and culture both within Charlotte and beyond.

With more than a decade of curatorial experience, her work has consistently foregrounded the depth and complexity of modern and contemporary art through exhibitions, publications, and acquisitions that expand traditional art historical narratives. Prior to joining the Gantt Center, Bateman held curatorial roles at institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, the Williams College Museum of Art, and the Nasher Museum of Art.

A respected scholar and thought leader, Bateman earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in Art History and Visual Culture from Duke University and her B.A. in Art History from Williams College. Her research — supported by organizations including the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Social Science Research Council — explores photography, Black feminist and womanist theory, and the role of social media within activism and liberation practices.

As moderator for Charlotte Collects: Black Collectors on Contemporary Art, Dr. Bateman will guide an important dialogue examining collecting not simply as acquisition, but as cultural preservation, stewardship, and a means of shaping how Black artistic legacies are documented and sustained for future generations.

Collector Spotlight ✨ CCH Pounder ✨

Award-winning actress. Cultural steward. Global arts advocate. Visionary collector.
For decades, CCH Pounder has shaped conversations across film, television, and the arts while building a collection that powerfully affirms the richness, complexity, and global reach of African diasporic creativity.

Known for acclaimed roles in NCIS: New Orleans, The Shield, Avatar: The Way of Water, Rustin, The X-Files, and countless other productions, Pounder’s artistic impact extends far beyond the screen. Her lifelong commitment to Black art and cultural preservation has positioned her as one of the most influential collectors and patrons championing artists from Africa, the Caribbean, and the African diaspora.

Born in Georgetown, Guyana, Pounder’s collecting practice is deeply rooted in history, identity, and cultural continuity. Her collection — spanning more than 500 works — includes contemporary art and traditional African sculpture, with works exhibited at institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

In 1992, Pounder and her late husband, Boubacar Koné, founded Musée Boribana in Dakar, Senegal — the first privately owned contemporary art museum in the country — later gifting it to the nation of Senegal in 2014. Through this extraordinary act of cultural investment, Pounder helped create lasting infrastructure for African contemporary art and artists on the continent.
Whether through collecting, philanthropy, advocacy, or storytelling, Pounder’s work continues to expand visibility for artists of the African diaspora while preserving cultural narratives for future generations.

Join CCH Pounder for Charlotte Collects: Black Collectors on Contemporary Art as she shares insights into collecting, legacy, and the transformative power of supporting Black art.
