We are proud to announce that the Cecil E. Roberts Legacy Fund has donated $50,000 to the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum in Matewan, WV.

This contribution will help support the museum's organizational development, including hiring a full-time Development Coordinator, and expand youth education initiatives aimed at keeping true labor movement history alive.

Even better? The staff at the West Virginia Mine Wars Museum are card-carrying members of the UMWA. When you support working-class history, you should be supporting actual union workers in the process!

The Cecil E. Roberts Legacy Fund is proud to have donated toward a new mural at the "mouth" of Cabin Creek off the Chelyan exit, a place especially close to our hearts, as Cabin Creek is where Cecil grew up.

Painted by artist Blake Wheeler, this 24'x12' piece honors the history of the United Mine Workers of America and commemorates the 1912–1913 Paint Creek/Cabin Creek strike. It features Mother Jones and Mother Blizzard, who courageously fought for miners' rights.

Cabin Creek holds a deep legacy for the Roberts family, too: Cecil’s mother, Evelyn Roberts, granddaughter of Ma Blizzard, lived right here on Cabin Creek until her passing in 2019.

We are honored to support artwork that preserves our rich union history, honors our family roots, and keeps these powerful stories alive for generations to come.

Many of our visitors don't realize that the museum is owned by this fund, which was created to ensure that workers’ history is never forgotten or rewritten. Our purpose is to honor and advance the preservation of the labor movement and celebrate its lasting impact on our families, communities, and societies.

But history is only as powerful as the people who remember it. That’s why a core focus of the fund is raising money for youth education.
