A new exhibition is coming to the Gibbes, and it tells a powerful story of freedom through craft.⁣
⁣
Opening October 16, Fighting for Freedom: Black Craftspeople and the Pursuit of Independence explores the creations, contributions, and legacies of African Americans who used their skills and craftsmanship as a means of seeking agency and independence.⁣
⁣
Spanning from the Revolutionary era through the present, the exhibition brings together more than 30 objects, including furniture, metalwork, ceramics, textiles, tools, personal accessories, and works of art, made by both free and enslaved craftspeople.⁣
⁣
Behind each object is a story of skill, resilience, creativity, and the pursuit of freedom. Together, these works illuminate the countless known and unnamed craftspeople whose hands helped create expressions of independence in many forms.⁣

Fighting for Freedom is organized by the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum in partnership with the Black Craftspeople Digital Archive.⁣

Walk Through: A Fine Art Exhibition brings together more than 85 original works by local, regional and nationally recognized artists for an exclusive one-night live art salon at the Gibbes Museum of Art.

Featuring work by Jonathan Green, Jill Hooper, West Fraser, Robert Lange, Reynier Llanes and Dylan Martinez, the exhibition is curated by CINÉ in support of My Sister’s House. Experience art through three thoughtfully curated chapters: Reclamation, Resilience, and Renewal, with works available for acquisition throughout the evening.
