We celebrate Black History 365 days of the year and understand that there is still so much Black History/ American History to unearth! During the entire month of February, in keeping with previous years, we will celebrate Black History Month by sharing some of the inspirational bits of. Charleston Black history we have learned and unearthed over the years.

Did you know that THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN OWNED LAW FIRM IN AMERICA WAS LOCATED ON BROAD STREET IN THE FRENCH QUARTER SECTION OF HISTORIC DOWNTOWN CHARLESTON, SC? Makes you wonder how many other black owned businesses and residents surrounded their office during that time (I’ll save the answer to that question for another post😃☝🏾) but for now…

Meet Macon B. Allen (phoot #1), America’s first African American Attorney and Judge who served as a partner at America’s first African American owned law firm established in Charleston, SC in 1868. His partners were William J. Whipper (photo #3) and Robert Brown Elliot (photo #5), both highly accomplished in their own right. The law firm was located at 91 Broad St ( photos #2, 4,& 6) on the peninsula of Historic Charleston, SC a few doors down from the historic Broad St post office and the 4 corners of law. There are no historic markers anywhere on the building or on the street indicating this fact but a simple google search brought up droves of historic photos and documents on a number of reputable websites.

Macon and his wife Emma had five children, all of whom served as teachers. Macon B. Allen made his transition on October 10, 1894 after 50 years of legal service. He was memoralized at Saint Mark’s Protestant Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and is buried in the Friendly Union Cemetery. The National Bar Association honored Macon Bolling Allen for 50 years of legal service and the New York Bar Association is named in his honor.

💔💔💔💔 Praying for the safety, strength, peace, and direction of Mr. Walt and every individual impacted by the fires in California. So very heart breaking🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿❤️❤️❤️❤️This could be anyone of us. Comfort them all in their time of mourning dear God. I pray that you will give them beauty for ashes as they seek you relentlessly for protection, direction, and provision. May they rise from despair with a greater sense of what is most important in this life and a revelation of how fleeting our time on earth truly is. May this experience give them an even greater sense of purpose and dependence on You! May they seek You for direction in everything. I pray that You carry them through this trying time, giving them a greater revelation of who You are in them and others. May they understand what they are capable of achieving by your power and to your glory. Comfort them like never before. In Jesus name, Amen.

We couldn’t leave our brief visit to the Upstate without visiting with Rosa and Winton Eugene. The Eugenes are legendary potters who over the years have become surrogate grandparents to Sabina and dear friends. Hard to believe it had been over a year since they had seen Sabina in person and like everyone else, Ms. Rosa was so surprised at how much Sabina had grown since she last saw her. A visit with the Eugenes is always filled with loads of gut busting laughter and loads of wisdom. I am so grateful for the wealth of advice Ms. Rosa bestowed upon Sabina when it came to giving interviews during this visit. Her advice comes from years of giving interviews about her artistry and story. One nugget she shared was that, “There will always be people that will try to place limitations on you…don’t make them your focus. Do the work in terms of preparation and move forward in confidence and purpose, always making sure you share something in each interview that will help someone and brighten a listener’s day.”

I don’t know how Ms. Rosa manages to surprise Sabina with the most thoughtful gifts during every visit, even on short notice. There are no words to adequately express how grateful I am for these two beautiful individuals. We can talk on the phone for hours but there is nothing like an in person visit to warm my soul.
