Tomorrow night, we open PRESCRIBED BURN, Emma Barnes’ debut solo exhibition with Stevenson & Co.

There is something unmistakable about an artist arriving at a language entirely her own. Emma’s is already there—photography embedded in plaster, painted landscapes interrupted and excavated, surfaces built up, burned away, and returned to again. The work feels simultaneously ancient and immediate: part image, part object, part memory.

We could not be prouder to present this exhibition and this remarkable new body of work.

Stevenson & Co. is proud to present Emma Barnes’ debut solo exhibition, PRESCRIBED BURN, opening this Friday.

Beaufort-based artist Emma Barnes returns to a process she witnessed growing up on her family’s farm: the controlled burning of fields at the turn of a season. Necessary destruction. Dead growth cleared away. The landscape suspended between what has been and what is yet to come.

Across plaster, photography, and painting, Barnes traces that threshold through burning fields, magnolias, tidal shifts, rural treelines, cowfields, and coastal skies. Images are transferred, buried, hardened, peeled back, and preserved—landscape becoming relic, memory becoming material, home becoming something at once fading and regenerating.

June Upton first exhibited with Stevenson & Co. during our Friends of Ukraine fundraiser, where her Sunflowers and Serpents paintings introduced collectors to her unmistakable sense of color, light, and everyday beauty. That introduction led to her debut solo exhibition, Guest Check, a body of work that found poetry in kitchens, counters, flowers, and the rituals of daily life.

This summer, Upton returns with Phantom Flowers, a new series presented as part of The Garden Variety. The paintings feel both familiar and elusive—blooms that hover somewhere between memory and observation, rendered with the quiet confidence and luminous palette that have become hallmarks of her work.

Phantom Flowers is now on view through August 12 at Stevenson & Co.

An obsession with the ordinary.

Long before The Garden Variety Show, there were Anderson Wrangle’s photographs from his Outer Banks series.

His images ask us to slow down—to notice what passes overhead, what gathers at the edge of a yard, what quietly exists without asking to be seen. In paying close attention to the commonplace, the ordinary begins to feel extraordinary.

These cloud studies became the point of departure for The Garden Variety Show for gallery owner and director, Patrick Stevenson: an exhibition built on the belief that wonder isn’t something rare. It’s something we overlook. Sometimes the most remarkable subject is simply looking up.

Known for her elegant vessels and sculptural ceramics, Janette Wall is turning a corner with a remarkable new body of work: hand-carved bas-relief ceramic tiles inspired by the enduring beauty of the garden. Delicate irises emerge from the clay with the quiet refinement of a botanical illustration and the permanence of architectural ornament.

We’re pleased to debut this new direction in Janette’s work next Friday as part of The Garden Variety Show at Stevenson & Co.
