True North — Leigh Royer’s second solo exhibition with Stevenson & Co. — opens this November. A new body of work shaped by Royer’s restless study of light, color, atmosphere, and place, and by the instinct to keep looking until the essential reveals itself. For Emma Barnes, plaster is not simply a ground upon which an image sits. It becomes surface, material, and image at once—absorbing, obscuring, and transforming what is placed upon it.

“People are usually surprised with how the plaster absorbs the ink or photograph. Sometimes they are uncertain what is a photo or what is painted.”

In Broad River, the photographic and the handmade are deliberately difficult to separate. Ink enters the plaster rather than merely resting upon it, allowing the landscape to appear simultaneously recorded and materially altered.

For Emma Barnes, place is more than subject matter. It carries memory, history, and contradiction—particularly in the rural South Carolina landscape of her childhood, where familiarity and change exist side by side.

“How do we begin to put the weight of a place into words? I want to sit with all the complexity in the landscape of home.”

In Cow Pond, a familiar scene becomes something less fixed: plaster, oil, and ink build a surface in which the image is preserved, interrupted, and reconsidered. The work is not simply about depicting a place, but about understanding what remains of it through memory.

For Emma Barnes, process is not simply the means by which her pieces are made. It is a negotiation between intention and material - between what can be planned and what must be allowed to happen.

“I enjoy how the materials together force me to let go and relinquish some control, and I’m often happier with the unpredicted outcome.”

In Bostick Circle, plaster, ink, and acrylic register the push and pull Emma describes between planning and surrender, each material altering the original image as the work evolves.

Tomorrow night, we open PRESCRIBED BURN, Emma Barnes’ debut solo exhibition with Stevenson & Co.

There is something unmistakable about an artist arriving at a language entirely her own. Emma’s is already there—photography embedded in plaster, painted landscapes interrupted and excavated, surfaces built up, burned away, and returned to again. The work feels simultaneously ancient and immediate: part image, part object, part memory.

We could not be prouder to present this exhibition and this remarkable new body of work.

Stevenson & Co. is proud to present Emma Barnes’ debut solo exhibition, PRESCRIBED BURN, opening this Friday.

Beaufort-based artist Emma Barnes returns to a process she witnessed growing up on her family’s farm: the controlled burning of fields at the turn of a season. Necessary destruction. Dead growth cleared away. The landscape suspended between what has been and what is yet to come.

Across plaster, photography, and painting, Barnes traces that threshold through burning fields, magnolias, tidal shifts, rural treelines, cowfields, and coastal skies. Images are transferred, buried, hardened, peeled back, and preserved—landscape becoming relic, memory becoming material, home becoming something at once fading and regenerating.
