Made by Hand – Imprimatur Charleston Printmakers’ Show

Corrigan Gallery llc presents Imprimatur Charleston’s printmakers’ show, “Made By Hand,” for the first time since Covid interrupted its inaugural show! Imprimatur Charleston was created in 2013 as the contemporary form of The Charleston Etchers Club and Print Studio South. The show will be up for the month of October and features Aaron Baldwin, Allison Hull, Cat Wondergem, Lese Corrigan, William Meisburger, Mary Walker, Kristi Ryba, Elizabeth O’Neill Verner, Alfred Hutty, Anna Heyward Taylor. A series by French artist James Coignard will also be available. Woodcuts, Japanese method color woodcuts, linocuts, silkscreen, etchings, and monotypes will be displayed.
Charleston Etchers Club was created by Charleston Renaissance artists Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, Elizabeth O’Neill Verner, and Alfred Hutty in 1923 among others. Their large printing press was housed at the Charleston Museum in exchange for etchings. Decades later in 1992, Peggy Howe, Jean Smith, Kristi Ryba were inspired to create Print Studio South, a fine art printmaking collaborative. It was located on Wentworth Street with a printing press on loan from the Gibbes. The press was later moved to Redux in 2002 and is available for artists’ use.
The prints displayed are fine art prints pulled by the artists themselves. They are not reproductions. Yes, there are multiples of the works, excepting the monotypes, but these editions are produced by the artists from a matrix not a machine.
Membership in Imprimatur Charleston is open to printmakers and collectors around the south. Originally created to promote printmaking’s’ return and now to celebrate it and the interest that has increased over the last decade.
