Heritage Towers and it’s Black Culture & African Heritage Exhibit are vital components of the culture of West Virginia, providing enriching and educational enlightenment for all, from pre-school age children to senior citizens. The Black Culture & African Heritage Exhibit was erected for the preservation and disse

mination of information regarding the history and contributions of individuals of African descent. The Exhibit, a collection of galleries unfolding the story of American Heritage from life in West Africa, to the courageous travel along the Underground Railroad trails and the history of African American coal miners. The Exhibit Gallery and Museum is a place of learning and a place to experience African and African American culture in the heart of Charleston. Heritage Towers Black Culture & African Heritage exhibits are reflections of time providing vital historical perspectives of African Americans in West Virginia. Visitors to the art and exhibit museum learn about events, significant accomplishments, and

contributions made by Black people from West Virginia. Heritage Towers provides a series of exhibits, lectures, concerts, cultural celebrations, festivals and programs designed to preserve the past and strengthen the future.

Ophelia DeVore Mitchell (1922-2014) with her children,
was an American businesswoman, publisher, and model.
She was the first model of African-American descent in the United States. and a founder of the Grace Del Marco Agency, one of the first modeling agencies in the US.
She developed a makeup line and the first beauty pageant for black women in the US.
