There are histories that live in books, and histories that live in the hands. In the Lowcountry, the tradition of sweetgrass basket weaving carries generations of memory, resilience, and Gullah Geechee heritage. Each weave is a thread connecting past to present. A living tradition, rooted in the land and woven so deeply into history that you can feel it in your soul.🌊🌾

View CoreyAlston SweetgrassBaskets and many more works in Grounded in Grain, Washed in the Water from now through December 5.

Grounded in Grain, Washed in the Water 🌊

Created in collaboration with the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture, this exhibition brings together works by Southern artists who reflect on land, water, foodways, memory, and the enduring resilience of Black communities. Through painting, collage, sculpture, and immersive installations, the exhibition invites us to consider how the wisdom of our ancestors continues to nourish both body and spirit.

Join us as we celebrate histories of survival, creativity, renewal, and reflect on the deep connections between people, place, and the natural world.

✨ Featuring works by Derrick Beasley, Christa David, Corey Alston, and Maya Freelon. Curated by Lauren Jackson Harris
