This Day in History!

139 years ago today, at 9:50 p.m., Charleston was shaken by the powerful Earthquake of 1886, which had an estimated 7.3 magnitude. The Edmondston-Alston House sustained its fair share of damage as portions of the parapet, the second-floor balcony, and the ironwork collapsed, while a significant crack split the north wall. The earthquake was said to have been felt from Cuba all the way to Chicago.

If you’ve joined one of our guided tours, you may have seen these historic photographs capturing the aftermath! Shortly after the quake, earthquake bars were installed in the rear of the house, where they can still be seen today. Come visit us to see these photos for yourself!
