Join us October 3 for The Great New Castle Hunt, a one-of-a-kind competitive scavenger hunt presented by NCHS in collaboration with the creative minds at cityHUNT. Using the cityHUNT interactive mobile platform on their smartphones, teams will explore New Castle by car and on foot as they solve clues, complete fun challenges, answer trivia, and uncover the rich history, hidden gems, and fascinating stories that make our community unique. The event concludes with a BBQ reception at the Greeley House! For ages 21+ only.

Did you miss us? After a busy August behind the scenes, we're preparing to reopen on Saturday, September 5! Join us for our first ever Fall Featured Artist exhibition, 'Botanicals & Birds,' featuring recent works by local artist Sarah Wry. Sarah's watercolor and graphite works will be exhibited in the beautiful rooms of the historic Greeley House and alongside historic objects from our collection. Saturday, July 4 is the final day to view our anniversary exhibition, 'The Stories We Share.' Celebrate America's 250th birthday alongside Town Historian Gray Williams, who will be on site all day to share his incredible knowledge, including early American history, local Quaker history, and the dozens of figures and scenes depicted in Sarah Emily Birdsall Griffith's 1903 Patriotic Quilt. We're open 11am - 3pm. Don't miss this opportunity to discover the stories of rarely exhibited objects from our collection and learn from our very own town historian!

Why did Sarah Emily Birdsall Griffith embroider the words, "Ring, Grandpa, Ring, Ring" into the depiction of the Liberty Bell in her Patriotic Quilt? It comes from a story by George Lippard, initially published in 1847. In his telling, an elderly bellman waited in the steeple of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, slowly losing hope that Congress would declare independence. Just as he fell into despair, a young boy yelled up the stairs for him to ring the bell and proclaim liberty! Whether fact or fiction, this story became closely associated with the Liberty Bell during Sarah's lifetime, making its way into her 1903 quilt through the embroidered lettering and her depictions of the old man and young boy flanking the bell. What other fascinating scenes from American history will you find in this extraordinary quilt? See it for yourself this Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, 11am - 3pm!

Only two more weeks to see our anniversary exhibition, 'The Stories We Share.' Bring the whole family to discover the stories behind rarely or never-before exhibited objects from the last 250 years of New Castle's history, from the Revolutionary War era to today. The exhibition is on view Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 11am - 3pm, through July 4.
