I hope you’ll come out to “art around” and pop by to check out my work. I have my newest sculptures with me this weekend They function as lanterns which have a rotating base and cast a light show when the room is dark enough. They can also be hung on the wall (without the light feature, for now) to serve as decoration. So, if you don’t have shelf space for sculpture you can hang some of my work like a painting. You’ll just HAVE to come & see them in person!

I’m doing some outdoor shows this spring! I don’t usually show in the spring so I’m branching out this year. I hope you’ll come out to “art around” and pop by to check out my work. These events will also be the public debut of a my newest sculptures. They function as lanterns which rotate and cast a light show when the room is dark enough. Last Thursday night we bricked up the door to the wood kiln. On Friday we fired from 7 AM - 7 PM, constantly stoking the kiln with wood, in shifts. I will be unloading this wood kiln with several other artists out at Saturday, April 11th, at noon. We had a great firing crew last Friday and the kiln has cooled and contains a wide variety of art in it waiting to be unloaded & seen for the FIRST TIME. Watching the final pieces come out of this kiln is a unique experience and when you come to this Pottery and Glass Festival out at Cedar Creek Gallery, there’s all kinds of OTHER neat stuff to see! Glass blowing, wood turning, & pottery demonstrations including live raku firing 🔥 OH MY! So, come out to this family friendly wonderland of artistry & art around with us 😃 you will not be disappointed! If you buy a pot… you can even shop for the perfect plant for it in the nursery… yes, there’s a plant nursery here also! 🪴 (live music, food truck, & beer tent also on site) What’s NOT to love about this festival? 🥰 Nothing.

Sometimes you gotta just take a little mini vacay. This spot was my go-to nosh stop when I had studio sp(ace) (my space was a “sp” because it was half a rental-studio and shaped like a pie slice) before they moved to their current location. I don’t live in Durham now but I am “Durham born-&-raised” and I have immense pride in the vibrant community that our, once near-deserted, historic downtown has returned to. The new development is a controversial theme amongst “Durham natives” & long term residents m. However, the “transplants” who are attracted to the vibrancy harbored by the timeless bones of our historic downtown, need somewhere to live and as long as they support our reborn downtown I welcome them them to the fold!I LOVE that Geer St. is still here and I’m regretful that it’s been so long since I stopped in. The second I popped in after 3 years, Mark, the bartender welcomed me with recognition as a past regular and despite the downtown revitalization of the past 10 years, the local service industry professionals keep the “Bull City OG” rep alive. As Mark welcomed me after (probably) over three years of absence, I thought “THIS. This is why I’m SO proud to call Durham my hometown.”
Thanks for my mini staycation.

Long story short, I’m okay but I’m officially out of commission for standing or sitting for long periods or picking up anything with weight. There are lots of stairs involved with being in my studio- and when I carve I lose track of time. I snuck a little carving in on Tuesday and then spent yesterday regretting that. Meanwhile, I’m ACTUALLY watching the weeds grow through the window knowing NOW is the time to get ahead of them! Insert groans of frustration ^here^ I’m grateful for my overall luck in health. I do not care for the timing of this particular sidequest of immobility.
I have been SO looking forward to seeing these new bigger sculptures finished! Someone pass me some binoculars, please… that finish line seems so much further away now.

What shows up in your work when you get the chance to be creative? This is just a little portrait of my studio gallery on the wall that I face while I’m working 50% of the time. I’ve always been enchanted by crystals and usually displayed them on a table by the window with my plants, but then I found out that it’s not healthy for the crystal to sit and direct sunlight in the plants lol a bunch of my plants really appreciate that so I moved my crystals to my studio and now some of my carving designs have a little bit more life context for people viewing my work. I wouldn’t say that crystals inspire my designs. I have come to believe that my designs are partly influenced by the inner workings of emotional energy which flows out of me looking like some type of crystalline puzzle structure sometimes. What shows up in your work when you get the chance to be creative? Shoot me an answer in the comments - BECAUSE inquiring minds wish to know!

What’s blooming around you? Spring is doing its thing here outside my studio. My garden is begging for attention and beckons me to come out and play. As always, studio work is my priority in March. I haven’t had a birthday gathering that didn’t include stoking or unloading a wood kiln in a few years. After covid took me out in early February & with the good fortune of having several wood firing deadlines… I am scrambling to catch up in my studio and in need of a gardening partner ASAP for planting and mulching. Wisdom informs me that wood firings & spring wait for NO ONE. W**d season is upon us- I must enact my battle plan before the pollening begins!
I got my various hellebores 3 years ago on a belated birthday visit to nursery with my mom who is a “master gardener” yes that is an actual thing… I liken it to being a Free Mason of gardening.
