Happy Pride Month! 🌈 Today, we're spotlighting "Girl with a Monkey" (1929) by Marie Laurencin, an artist famous for her soft, dream-like portraits of women. While her work was influenced by both Cubism and Fauvism, it did not fully align with either of these movements and took on a distinctive style of its own. Scholars have increasingly placed Laurencin's work in the q***r circles of 1920s Paris, including the sapphic salons of the American expat and heiress Natalie Clifford Barney. Once dismissed by some critics as hyper-feminine, Laurencin's work can also be understood as a subtle challenge to the masculine norms of modernism.

🚨 Ackland mentioned! 🚨 The Spring 2026 issue of the Carolina Arts & Sciences magazine features an article about the UNC course Philosophy Across the Lifespan with philosopher Michael Vazquez, which brings together students and older adults from the Chapel Hill community for inter-generational dialogue. The class began the semester at the Ackland, where students gathered to analyze and discuss artworks from different times and places, grappling with questions like, "What is the opposite of the art you're looking at?" 🌍 Happy ! We're celebrating our shared home with a landscape by Camille Pissarro, "The Banks of the Oise, Near Pontoise" (1876), currently on view at the Ackland. Painted in the Impressionist style, the brushstrokes remain largely unblended, creating a sense of movement and shifting light. If you look closely, you'll notice a landscape in transition, as a quiet riverbank takes its first steps toward industrialization β€” workboats drift on the water as smokestacks rise in the distance. On Earth Day, works like this encourage us to reflect on how human activity affects the natural world. Stop by this week to take in this thought-provoking view for yourself!

In celebration of Arab American Heritage Month, we're spotlighting "We Will Control the Vertical" by artist Diana Al-Hadid (), whose practice spans sculpture, wall reliefs, and works on paper. Born in Aleppo, Syria and raised in Ohio, Al-Hadid investigates the innate tension between mass and gravity, often creating what she describes as "something that seems improbable." In "We Will Control the Vertical," long paint drips in pastel and dark tones build an abstract, city-like skyline, sitting somewhere between construction and collapse. Learn more about Al-Hadid on her website πŸ‘‰ https://loom.ly/RWh5PeI
