Brown Farm Pioneer Days

Brown Farm Pioneer Days An event held every year in July to demonstrate and remember past agricultural heritage. 2019 Pioneer Days will be held Sat. & Sun. July 27-28.
Located at 1361 Sawyer Road -- 1.5 miles east of Central City, Iowa on Co. Rd. E-16 -- this historic farm is the legacy of Lloyd Brown, a lifelong collector of antiques and farm machinery. His final wish was that his 84 acre farmstead and vast collection of antiques and vintage machinery become the property of the Central City Historical Society. The Historical Society has preserved and built on Lloyd’s legacy. Each year the Historic Brown Farm hosts a weekend to give people of all ages the chance to participate in our rich eastern Iowa rural heritage. All proceeds are used to maintain and upgrade the Historic Brown Farm.

Every year since 2007, the Brown Farm Pioneer Days have occurred. Starting out as a one day event, it has slowly evolved into a weekend long event that showcases a different brand of farm machinery every year along with many events that help to give show attendants a feel for how Iowa farm life has evolved and the amount of labor involved in farming and rural life. The Brown Farm Pioneer Days are held in July. Dates for the 2017 Pioneer Days are Saturday and Sunday July 29-30 from 10AM until 5PM both days. There is some primitive camping available and horses, tractors, combines, and equipment are welcome to attend and help demonstrate! In 2017, the featured brand of farm equipment will be Massey Ferguson.

Mission: Help keep the past of agriculture and rural life alive.

Making Sorghum Molasses
by Edwin McCoy
Growing sorghum doesn’t take much work, according to Buhrman. You plant it in the spring, work it a couple of times and that’s about all that’s required until late in the growing season. That is when the work begins. Before it is cut, all the stalks have to be “bladed” – the leaves removed from the stalks. It’s then cut, then the tassles are cut off, and the stalks are fed through a crusher. The crusher forces the juices out of the plant. The sorghum juice is then boiled in a vat for four to five hours until nothing is left but the syrup.

Affordable Sawmill – and Lumber
by Bill Reeks
As we all know nowadays, costs are high on about everything. But ever so often someone finds a way to “get-around” some of these expenses. Such was the case for Bill Reeks when high winds broke, uprooted and damaged many trees on his forty-eight acres. Knowing many board feet of nice lumber lay within these logs if only there was an “affordable way” to make these many logs into good, accurate lumber, he decided to build himself a band sawmill out of the “left-overs” from many years on construction jobs.

Rural Heritage Magazine

I am sharing this because Rural Heritage filmed at Brown Farm a few years ago.....I also believe it to be a great publication with something for everyone with articles ranging from bee keeping to logging with horses, mules and oxen. Lots of articles on vintage equipment...down to earth, easy to read, great pics and published right in Cedar Rapids!!!!

The December 2018/January 2019 issue of Rural Heritage magazine is at your local Tractor Supply and other farm stores. There are some fascinating stories as well as instructional and historical ones. And the first installment of a series of articles on restoring an gambrel roofed barn with a log base.

One of the highlights of this year's Brown Farm Pioneer Days
Horse demonstrations was putting together an eight-horse hitch to run a small square baler using a ground driven PTO forcart. It took a lot to make this happen with teams being owned by 3 different people. It's just awesome to watch it all come together and have these magnificent draft horses working with their teamsters!
