Make plans to REMEMBER & HONOR those who have served in the military from our community on Saturday, December 14th, 2024 @ 10 a.m.. We will meet in the square for the opening ceremony, canon & gun salute, the presentation of the flags, musical tribute & the playing of TAPS. We will then proceed to break up and go to the five cemetery locations we honor and lay wreaths at the graves of EVERY veteran! Those cemetery locations are: Greenwood I & II, Caledonia, Cold Springs, and Holly Springs.
This will be our 4th year to participate in the event, held all across our nation on this same day!!! What a day of honor it is! The prime opportunity to TEACH your children about serving and honoring others!
On this day we will begin our fundraising for 2025 wreaths...we will be taking donations to go towards our goal for next year and will run our fundraising campaign until mid-January. All wreaths for this year have already been purchased for every veteran. If you drive thru the cemeteries you will see the veteran's graves already marked with American Flags...it is a site to behold! We will be laying almost 500 wreaths in our small town of Garrison!
PLEASE SHARE THIS POST AND MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

It may not be on everyone’s calendar but January 19 is a state holiday in Texas called “Confederate Heroes Day" and has been since 1973. It falls on Robert E. Lee’s birthday, but it’s not just the confederate general being celebrated. The holiday is also meant to honor confederate president Jefferson Davis and other Confederate Heroes.It is a day for ruminating on the sacrifices and achievements of the confederate soldiers who did all they could to stand for whatbthe believed in.

It wouldn't be proper to let this day go by without mentioning Jefferson Davis, born this day in 1808.

His resume:

West Point graduate;
Colonel, U. S. Army;
Veteran, Mexican War, where despite suffering a heel wound during the fighting, his tactics stopped a flanking attack by the Mexican forces that threatened to collapse the American line;
After turning down (for Constitutional reasons) an offer of a federal commission as a brigadier general, he accepted an appointment to fill an uncompleted term as a...;
US Senator, where he served for four years before resigning to run for Governor of his native Mississippi;
US Secretary of War, until the election of a new President with his own preferences for that position, so...;
US Senate again, where he served until Mississippi's secession ended his term, calling hearing news of Mississippi's secession "the saddest day of my life"; after which he was;
Elected President of the Provisional Confederate government.
Upon capture at the end of the war, he was imprisoned for two years and released without a trial (despite his desire to have a trial and an opportunity for a defense).

And in the 1850's it was as a US Senator that he left his greatest contribution to the US, as it was he who spearheaded the transformation of the US Capitol building into its present structure. The National Endowment for the Humanitites even goes so far as to say that "the U.S. Capitol, as we know it today, would never have existed without Jefferson Davis. In many ways, it is his building." Truly, it is one Jefferson Davis monument that will never be torn down.

Happy 215th birthday, Jefferson Davis!
