Cayce Historical Museum

Join us for a tour of the Congaree Creek Civil War battlefield at the 12,000-Year History Park.

Sherman's army had 45 firefights with Confederate forces between January 1, 1865 and the capture of Columbia on February 17. The battle at Congaree Creek will be among the 3 largest battles involving Sherman's forces during this time frame. Join us as we walk the battlefield, visit the earthworks and learn about the strategies and tactics used by both sides as Sherman marched through South Carolina on his way to Columbia.

Meet on Saturday, September 5 at 10:00 AM at the entrance to the park just beyond the Cayce Tennis Center, 1120 Fort Congaree Trail in Cayce. Free parking at the dirt lot on the left just past the Tennis Center.

This free tour is 1.5 miles long, mostly in shade and on sidewalks, and will take about 2 hours. The tour is sponsored by the City of Cayce.

Remembering Andy Thomas

The Cayce Historical Museum mourns the passing of our friend, fellow historian and Curator, Andy Thomas.

Andy devoted decades to studying, teaching and reenacting history with a special love for colonial times. He was dedicated to his work at the Cayce Historical Museum throughout his time at the museum implementing new programs, events and exhibits. He was a wonderful storyteller and shared his talent for many years at Cayce Fall Festival and on lantern tours. He provided visitors with a smiling face and friendly conversation at the Museum and during public events. He was open to trying new ideas, supporting community engagement and involvement at the Museum and 12,000 History Park.

We are grateful for Andy’s friendship, knowledge, and commitment to preserving Cayce’s past. We will remember all of his contributions to our community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. Although we will miss him dearly, he always will be remembered by the lives he touched and the impact on our community.

There are two events coming this week!

Tomorrow night at 6pm Rodger Winn will have a presentation on Heirloom Vegetables from the Midlands and seed preservation. There will be an opportunity to exchange seeds; feel free to bring in your heirloom seeds if you're interested. This lecture is free to the public and will be held in the Visitors Center.

This Saturday from 9:30am to 3:30pm, the museum is hosting the Genealogy Day Workshop. Among the other great participants, author Brent Holcomb will have a table for the event! There is a $5 dollar charge and it will also be held in the museum Visitors Center.

The Cayce Historical Museum is hosting a lecture by Rodger Winn on Heirloom Vegetables in the Dutch Fork area! Mr. Winn will talk about saving and preserving seeds from the Dutch Fork area of South Carolina. Along with his presentation there will be an opportunity to swap seeds, if that interests you feel free to bring your own heirloom seeds.

Thursday, August 20th at 6:00pm in the Visitors Center at the Museum. You can find us at 1800 12th Street in Cayce!
