The Hancock County (HCHS) was organized as a non-profit group dedicated to the collection and preservation of historical accounts of the entire county from its earliest inhabitants to current times. The Historical Society has an index file with approximately 350,000 entries, dozens of scrap book clippings, rolls of microfilm — of old newspapers from Carthage, Nauvoo, Hamilton, LaHarpe, Warsaw, Au

gusta, Bowen, Fountain Green and others in the surrounding area. Many of these date back to the 1840s and include accounts of the Mormon conflict, agricultural aspects, political events, family events, and advertising. Visitors are encouraged to browse the library and conduct research on their own or to ask a volunteer for assistance.

The April Quarterly Meeting of the Hancock County Historical Society will be on April18, 2026 at 7:00 pm at the Carthage Community Center, 301 E. Main Street, Carthage, IL 62321.

The speaker will be Dr. George Crickard III, an orthopedic surgeon at Quincy Medical Group.
His program will be “Medical Maladies of our 16th President”. Dr. Crickard will outline many ailments that Lincoln had including smallpox and malaria.

Everyone is invited to come and it is free to attend. Refreshments will be served.

The Hancock County Historical Society announces its February 21, 2026 quarterly program, it will be held at the Carthage Community Center, 301 Main St. Carthage, IL 62321, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Dan Moffitt will be presenting the program “The Moffitts, 200 Plus Years in Hancock County”. He is the sixth generation of the Moffitt family to live on the historic family farm, and he will tell stories and some of the history of this pioneer family.
Come join us for this very interesting program. There is no charge to attend and we will have refreshments.

Hancock County Historical Society Scholarships Now Available
ATTENTION: graduating seniors from Hamilton, Illini West, Southeastern, and Warsaw High Schools…
The HCHS is offering several scholarships for qualifying seniors from Hancock County high schools this year. Two, $2500 Scholarships, four, $1000 Olen Smith Memorial Scholarships (one for each of the four county high schools), and a $500 Memorial Scholarship. The $2500 & $1000 Scholarship applications are open for any qualifying senior that plans to attend a 2- or 4-year college, or a Technical/Vocational School. The $500 Memorial Scholarship application is available to qualifying seniors who plan to major in History, Library Science, or Education at a 2-or 4-year college. If you know of a graduating senior, encourage them to investigate the criteria with their high school guidance counselor and apply. The deadlines to apply are March 1, 2026 for the $2500 & 1000 Scholarships, and April 1, 2026 for the $500 memorial Scholarship.
