FIFTH ANNUAL QUILT SHOW UPDATE: VENDORS!

One of the many good things about a quilt show—indeed any craft show—is browsing the vendor area.

With a strong emphasis on quilts to purchase and quilting supplies to round out your studio, we also have vendors selling infused honey, plants, handmade aprons, Japanese knot bags, and mystery novels. Upcycled clothing is represented as are pillows, wreaths, table runners, and fabric. Charcuterie boards, wooden bowls, and wooden/metal barn quilts will be available as well.

It’s late July . . . not too early to think about Christmas?

FIFTH ANNUAL QUILT SHOW UPDATE: MUST-SEE PASSPORT IN TIME QUILTS

Some 25 years ago, the Forest Service promoted community projects for their local offices, opportunities for staff to meet and work with folks in the areas they serve. In our region, the Shawnee Forest branch of the Forest Service elected to promote a project called Passport in Time: expressing history, geography, and culture through quilting with local and visiting quilters and nonquilters.

Since it is our nation’s 250th birthday we’ve lined the walls of the Heritage Hall with PIT quilts. These quilts depict historical events such as the Trail of Tears and the expeditions of Lewis and Clark, geography/botanical quilts re the Shawnee Forest, and cultural topic such as the influence of the recent eclipses on our area.

FIFTH ANNUAL QUILT SHOW UPDATE: ON LOAN FROM . . .

On display at this year’s Quilt Show for the first time will be textile collections from several institutions throughout our region.

The Jackson County Historical Society has loaned us five autograph quilts (also called friendship quilts) from local schools and church groups. A sixth quilt from JCHS is a late 19th century pieced woolen quilt we hope to ask quilt historian Judy Schwender for some information (is it Amish-made perhaps?). See the Society’s table in Heritage Hall for information about this organization and to purchase raffle tickets for their quilt.

We have been loaned 7 quilts from the Pope County Historical Society. Several are friendship quilts made for young brides in the Golconda area and others were made for someone’s “hope chest.” Another is a rare buggy quilt made of fabric salvaged from men’s clothing. The remaining are 19th century quilts: an 1880 crazy quilt, a woven coverlet in three colors, and a fine Drunkard’s Path.

The Sharp Museum at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale has loaned us an extremely rare silk quilt made in the 1840s, which can be viewed in one of the showcase windows near the conference room. Other textiles on loan consist of assorted crazy quilts, an American woven coverlet, and a pieced quilt.

These quilts and more are on display in Heritage Hall of the Quilt Show and in the showcase windows.

FIFTH ANNUAL QUILT SHOW UPDATE: MEET OUR CO-HOST, THE SHAWNEE QUILTERS GUILD
It was a happy day when the Village partnered with the Shawnee Quilters Guild to hold our popular summer Quilt Show. One of the oldest quilting groups in the area, Shawnee Quilters formed their guild in 1986 and, like many craft guilds, have attracted members from a broadly defined region well beyond Southern Illinois.

The Guild numbers about active sixty members who meet on the third Friday of each month at the Carterville First United Methodist Church. They welcome members of all skill levels and hold classes throughout the year to teach new skills as well as traditional techniques.

The Shawnee Quilters are active in the community. They contribute annually one hundred quilts to various organizations and causes. And they hold workshops to focus on community projects, particularly those involving the welfare and comfort of children.

Visit the Shawnee Quilters’ information table in the Conference Center during the Quilt Show to learn more about the Guild. Members at the table will be demonstrating applique as well as hand-quilting techniques. And look for members wearing their creations in this year’s fashion show Saturday at 2 pm.

Due to the construction on campus, the front west entrance of the college is closed. The only entrance to the quilt show will be the F-building doors to the conference center located in the Gold Parking Lot. Below is a map of parking areas close to the entrance. Golf cart rides will be available.

FIFTH ANNUAL QUILT SHOW UPDATE: MODERN SPIN ON TRADITIONAL CRAFTS

Five regional craft guilds will be represented throughout both days of the Quilt Show.

Members of the Shawnee Quilters Guild will demonstrate applique and hand-quilting techniques in the Conference Center.

The ever-popular Heartland Ropemakers will practice rope making with antique equipment as it was done before the days of big-box stores (children in particular love to make their own rope!). Find them down the central hall.

Southern Illinois Stitchers, a regional branch of the Embroidery Guild of America, will feature different techniques in needlework near the contemporary quilts in the Conference Center.

And the Black Sheep Fiber Guild and Heartland Lacemakers will be housed in style beneath a glorious Lone Star quilt in Heritage Hall. Spinners, bobbin lacemakers, needleworkers, weavers, and knitters/crocheters will display their skills and artistry.

FIFTH ANNUAL QUILT SHOW UPDATE: GETTING ALL SEMIQUINCENTENNIAL

Our nation’s semiquincentennial will be celebrated throughout the Quilt Show this year.

Some of the contemporary quilts displayed by the Shawnee Quilters Guild boast combinations of our flag’s red-white-blue. Our honored guests The Quilts of Valor will display patriotic-themed quilts made for active service soldiers and veterans. And our annual quilt block contest has been given a patriotic theme this year as well.

We look to American history for guest speaker Betsy Brown, president of the board of the General John A. Logan Museum. She will talk on Sunday at 2:30 about how Mary Logan, the General’s wife and a non-quilter herself, “mustered” quilts to help the sick and injured during the Civil War.

Heritage Hall, room 118/119—just a few steps from the Shawnee Quilters contemporary quilt show—will display antique quilts from local individuals and the historical societies of Jackson and Pope counties. A private collection of Cherokee clothing and other items will be on display. SIU’s Sharp Museum will feature several 19th century quilts, and in a showcase window a magnificent quilt from the 1840s made of silk by an enslaved dressmaker living in Kentucky. And local history, geography, and culture will be featured in the regional Forest Service’s Passport in Time quilt project.
