In 2017, Tellus Science Museum opened a new solar house that reflects current advances in solar technology. It was designed by students from West Virginia University and University of Roma Tor Vergata for the U.S. Department of Energy's 2015 Solar Decathlon.
The competition challenges students to create comfortable, sustainable homes powered by solar energy. We made a few design changes to make it suitable for permanent exhibition, but it still runs on solar. On sunny days, the house’s solar panels generate enough electricity to run everything and still send power back to the utility company (Georgia Power). Rain or shine, the solar house is currently open daily from 11 AM to 3 PM.
