Our largest mound is 63ft tall. Any guesses on how many stairs it takes to get to the top of mound A?

What would Euharlee, Etowah, and 3 Mile Island have in common? can you connect the dots?

It's a cold frosty morning here at Etowah on this March 28, 2019, but think about this post and answer/respond to my question, or the pics. I'll post a response later.

40 years ago today: March 28, 1979 ...
An incident at 3 mile island in Pennsylvania occurred. If you have been on a guided tour at Etowah, you may already have an idea to the my why, but-

Why would 3 Mile Island be something I mention sometimes on a guided tour of the Etowah Mounds?

For those who are interested:

Attention - Friends of Georgia Archaeology!!

Come to New Echota Historic Site on Thursday, January 10th, for the annual pottery seminar and “hands on” washing hosted by the Northwest Georgia Archaeology Society. This is a great chance to learn about American Indian pre-Columbian ceramics from Georgia. The lecture and meeting is open to the public, and there is no charge for attending.

We will be washing and classifying pottery recovered from recent excavations in Northwest Georgia. The American Indians of the Southeastern United States began making pottery at about 1,000 B.C. We learn much about the early cultures of this area by studying changes in ceramic decoration and technology over a period that covers about 2,500 years.

During our discussion, you will learn how to identify some of the most important and interesting pottery styles of NW Georgia such as Deptford, Swift Creek, Cartersville, Lamar, Wilbanks, Etowah, Dallas, Woodstock, Little Egypt Phase, Brewster Phase, and Barnett Phase.

The meeting begins in the media room at the New Echota Museum at 7:00pm. The New Echota Historic Site is located near Calhoun, just off of I-75 at Exit 317. If you are coming from the south, turn right at the bottom of the exit ramp and go east on Highway 225 about one mile to the entrance to New Echota on the right.

If you have any questions, you may call Jim Langford at 404-831-1959, or Jack Walker at 770-655-2595. You may also call New Echota at 706-608-7754.

First Saturday Hike 2019
Saturday, Jan 5, 2019 (9:30 AM to 11:30 AM)

Celebrate the first weekend of the year with a short guided hike. The tour will include both, history and nature features of the site.

Dress for the weather. The hike will be less than 2 miles, in and around our trails. It will mostly be flat ground, but we will walk to the top of the mounds, which can be strenuous. Wind atop Mound A can be much faster in the Winter. If the day happens to be warm, we still suggest a windbreaker.

Be prepared for watching small wildlife.Cameras and binoculars may be something you would like to bring.

Reminder >>>
Greetings to Friends of Georgia Archaeology!

Come to Etowah Mounds on Thursday, November 8th to hear a unique program about abandoned and lost towns of North Georgia.

Lisa Russell, a Communications professor at Kennesaw State University, will discuss her two books: “Underwater Ghost Towns of North Georgia” and “Lost Towns of North Georgia”. Lisa conducted significant research on these towns – particularly those at the bottom of large lakes such as Allatoona, Carters, Chatuge, Blue Ridge, Burton, Hartwell, Thurmond, Lanier, and Nottely.

We invite you and other members of the public to attend this meeting of the NW Georgia Archaeological Society. Lisa requests that you bring any pictures of any old towns or homes that may have once been located under lakes in North Georgia. She continues to accumulate valuable pieces of information about the history of these towns as she makes speeches about her books.

Lisa is a native of the Buffalo, New York area and earned her Masters in Professional Writing at KSU. She has also completed extensive course work in Historical Research at KSU.

You may learn more about Lisa’s work at www.lisamrussell.net and www.russellink.org.

In addition, Lisa has two pages: “Lost Towns of North Georgia” and “Shorter Stories”. The latter is a place where visitors can share their stories about Shorter College.

Finally, you can find podcasts of Lisa reading some chapters from her books. These podcasts can be found under the title “Beyond the Page” by Lisa M. Russell.

The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm at Etowah Indian Mounds located at 813 Indian Mounds Road just south of Cartersville, Georgia. For more information, you may contact Jim Langford at 404-831-1959 or Jack Walker at 770-655-2595.

And yes... the event will still go on, because that means there is a 50% chance of sun and fun with no thunderstorms.

So, although, some of the outside activities may have to be played in-between rain storms, delayed due to thunder, or outright canceled because of downpours, there are still games that can be played inside.

Seen spawning today....
For a few days each year, if you happen to catch it, you can see fish spawn in the river. different species usually spawn at different times, so when guests tell rangers that it's happening, they never know till they look. I think these are small-mouth buffalo or some kind of river sucker. If anyone gets a better photo please share.
