Tracking used to be somewhat of an important everyday thing we needed to survive, and now it's something so few know how to do. this seems to be a great starter book for kids.

Coming soon to our gift shop: Whose Track is That? This kid friendly book can help identify different tracks you might find here around Etowah. Can anyone identify the tracks in the second picture?

It's great when you have such courteous guests.

Here is a big thanks to our visitors, Charles Loaf and his canine friend, for picking up litter as they hiked. Charles mentioned that he picks up trash where ever he hikes, and complemented us on how clean we were. I'd also like to thank all our other guests who have been here and didn't litter.

Join us at 2:00pm on February 9th to hear author and archaeologist Adam Kings lecture on Sky Gods and Their Creations:Ancient Imagery from the Etowah Site. Attention - Friends of Georgia Archaeology!!

Come to New Echota Historic Site on Thursday, January 9th, for the annual pottery seminar and “hands on” washing hosted by the Northwest Georgia Archaeology Society. This is a great chance to learn about American Indian pre-Columbian ceramics from Georgia. The lecture and meeting are open to the public, and there is no charge for attending.

We will be washing and classifying pottery recovered from recent excavations in Northwest Georgia. The American Indians of the Southeastern United States began making pottery at about 1,000 B.C. We learn much about the early cultures of this area by studying changes in ceramic decoration and technology over a period that covers about 2,500 years.

During our discussion, you will learn how to identify some of the most important and interesting pottery styles of NW Georgia such as Deptford, Swift Creek, Cartersville, Lamar, Wilbanks, Etowah, Dallas, Woodstock, Little Egypt Phase, Brewster Phase, Barnett Phase and historic Cherokee.

The meeting begins in the media room at the New Echota Museum at 7:00pm. The New Echota Historic Site is located near Calhoun, just off of I-75 at Exit 317. If you are coming from the south, turn right at the bottom of the exit ramp and go east on Highway 225 about one mile to the entrance to New Echota on the right.

If you have any questions, you may call Jim Langford at 404-831-1959, or you may also call New Echota at 706-608-7754.

What is your favorite candy / dessert for the holidays?

The Holidays are upon us. Halloween is just a week away. November is Native American Heritage Month. Thanksgiving, spending time with family and friends, eating lots of food, and then before you know it, Christmas lights are going down and you find yourself celebrating the 2020 New Year. It can be stressful if you let it.

Take a deep breath and relax. There are a lot of fun things to do this season. Come on to Etowah Mounds and kick off Native American Heritage Month on November 2nd, from 6 pm till 9 pm, with a fun and educational hayride. Enjoys some snacks and some stories. Then you can think about getting things ready for all the other holidays, the decorations, parties, and gifts. Then, as this year ends and a new one starts again, think about joining us for a short hike in the cold, followed by hot chocolate, coffee, and some snacks.

Make sure to keep an eye out for our 2020 programs as they are slowly getting posted om the state's event calendar.

A new set of programs at Etowah Mounds, this year, features Native American Stories, Animal Puppets, puppet making, and story telling. It' geared towards the young, but fun for all.

This sock puppet is Hans Schwarmer, the Interpretive Ranger's puppet friend. The puppet shows are free, but there is a small extra fee if you want to do the puppet making portion of the program and make your own puppet friend.

Keep an eye open for the next scheduled Saturday show. Space is limited in the theater, so you'll need to register for the show, especially if you want to do the puppet making program to learn about making a puppet and telling a story.

What would Euharlee, Etowah, and 3 Mile Island have in common? can you connect the dots?

It's a cold frosty morning here at Etowah on this March 28, 2019, but think about this post and answer/respond to my question, or the pics. I'll post a response later.

40 years ago today: March 28, 1979 ...
An incident at 3 mile island in Pennsylvania occurred. If you have been on a guided tour at Etowah, you may already have an idea to the my why, but-

Why would 3 Mile Island be something I mention sometimes on a guided tour of the Etowah Mounds?

First Saturday Hike 2019
Saturday, Jan 5, 2019 (9:30 AM to 11:30 AM)

Celebrate the first weekend of the year with a short guided hike. The tour will include both, history and nature features of the site.

Dress for the weather. The hike will be less than 2 miles, in and around our trails. It will mostly be flat ground, but we will walk to the top of the mounds, which can be strenuous. Wind atop Mound A can be much faster in the Winter. If the day happens to be warm, we still suggest a windbreaker.

Be prepared for watching small wildlife.Cameras and binoculars may be something you would like to bring.

Does anyone know if there are plans to view the solar eclipse, on the 21st, from the mounds? I think that would be awesome. I remember getting to see the Perseid meteor shower on the mounds over 30 years ago.
