Something we all ought to know about!

Have you noticed the new buoy located a few hundred yards out in front of the Abdella homestead? Anchored in the deepest part of West Caroga Lake, over 70 feet down, it marks the location of high-tech monitoring devices housed deep beneath the surface.

The equipment was installed this week by a field research team for the Survey of Climate and Adirondack Lake Ecosystems (SCALE) project. SCALE is a grant-funded initiative and part of the largest Adirondack Lake study in more than 40 years. An eight-person research team led by the Ausable Freshwater Center will manage the devices and collect samples. At the same time, researchers from RPI, CUNY, Syracuse, and Cornell will collaborate to analyze the data.

West Caroga Lake is one of only 10 lakes in the park selected for continuous monitoring over the next three years. This study will analyze a wide range of environmental factors, including the health and size of the fish population, algae and plant levels, potential toxicity, and oxygenation rates throughout the lake's depth columns. Another 300 lakes will undergo partial sampling, but our lake will be monitored continuously. Additionally, a small weather station has been installed on the east lakeshore to collect climate data, which will be integrated with satellite imagery.

Do you want to lower your stress level, reduce , improve
your memory, enhance your cognitive flexibility? IF YOU
ANSWERED yes , come to Johnstown Senior Center painting
class every Thursday morning 9:30 - 11:30. We are a group
of seasoned as well as budding artists all benefitting from
art's therapeutic value. We meet to exercise our creativity in
a friendly supportive environment. And as Henri Matisse
wisely said, " ...creativity takes courage". Each artist acts
as a mentor giving suggestions and encouragement to one
another. We are armed with our artistic tools, the elements
and principles of design, a variety of art mediums, and a
large dose of creativity. Through our art we have become
friends. often sharing thoughts and ideas helping each artist
through their artist journey. With the ebb and flow of
expressive insights and new perspectives we are a
meditation in motion. We are anxious to share the works of
our individual creative journeys. So, take a deep breath and
enjoy our paintings. Nancy Murphy, instructor
