I do not know who did the weed eating/trimming at the depot last week; but Thank You! It looks great!!!! Reminder: we will be having a workday at the depot this coming Saturday, May 19 at 9:00. We need to clean up the back yard of the depot. We also have our new gates for the front fence and we can install them on Saturday. If we have enough help, we can also work on cleaning out the caboose. I have ordered signs for the depot and newspaper museum but they are not ready yet. If anyone is interested in opening and monitoring the newspaper museum and/or the depot for the Alumni Luncheon on May 26, please let me know and i will get you a key. I will be gone that afternoon or I would open them. Thanks to all who participate and support us. Sam

On Saturday May 19, our workday will be to clean out the back yard of the depot.

If you know/have contact with any Carmen-Dacoma students form 1994-1995, please have them contact me about the time capsule opening next September.

Dear AEC Foundation: ATTN: Regina Waugh

Thank you so much for your grant of $500.00 to the Carmen Historical Organization of Oklahoma (CHOO). Your financial support is greatly appreciated. It is only through support from organizations such as yours that we can accomplish our mission.

Our officers this year are President, Sam Wooten; Vice-President, Cathy Sheik; Treasurer, Warren McCray; Secretary, Bobbi Parker; Historian, Randy Parker.

We hope to accomplish the following projects during 2018: repair of the south wall of the depot that was heavily damaged in a fire several years ago; replacement of the entry gates at the depot; repair and maintenance of the caboose at the depot; new signs for both the newspaper museum and the depot; placement of four new names on the veteran’s memorial wall in the Carmen Park.

We will keep all members and supporters updated and informed of the events and projects of the organization through email and our page.

The town of Carmen has a long and colorful history. Its memories are steeped with story after story of families and individuals that survived the hard times and the good times over the years. Our goal is to help preserve those memories through the maintenance of our historical sites and items. The Ralph Cain Memorial Newspaper Museum, the Orient (Santa Fe) Railroad Museum, and the Carmen War Memorial are all integral to the preservation of the history of Carmen.

Sam Wooten, President
Carmen Historical Organization of Oklahoma

I went to Enid yesterday to see about having our signs made for the museum and the depot. The shop was closed, but I will try again in a week or so. sam

Member update from February 18, 2018 CHOO meeting:

Members were reminded that it is time to pay their annual dues: (individuals $10.00; couples $15.00; businesses $10.00; individual lifetime $50.00; couples lifetime $100.00). Checks can be mailed to Sam Wooten, 421 East Main Street, Carmen, OK 73726. Anyone that needs to check and see if they are a lifetime member can contact me and I can confirm your membership.

Current officers agreed to serve for the year 2018. Sam Wooten, President; Cathy Shiek, Vice-President; Bobbi Parker, Secretary; Warren McCray, Treasurer; Randy Parker, Historian; Margaret Goss, Reporter.

Sam is going to have signs made for the depot and the museum. Verbiage will be: “Carmen Railroad Depot Museum” and “Ralph Cain Memorial Newspaper Museum”.

Members voted to purchase and install two red farm gates for the depot fence.

New names to be placed on the “War Memorial Wall” are; John D. Slack, Richard Belknap, and Bob Thomas. Sam will contact those families for the specifics of the veterans’ service.

Members voted to have a workday to clean out the back yard of the depot on19 April, 0900.

Members voted to have a workday to dust and sweep the museum and the depot on April 28, 0900.

Members discussed holding a ceremony to open the Carmen class of 1994-1995 time capsule that is buried in the Carmen Park. 2019 is the 25th anniversary for the class. A tentative date has been set for 1 June 2019. However, after reading the initial letter again, I read the class voted to open the capsule in the fall of 2019. So, I recommend that we honor their wishes and set the date for Saturday, 7 September 2019. That is the Saturday following Labor Day. We could also dedicate our new names on the memorial wall at that time. This is all tentative and I am open to any suggestions. We do need to start contacting those class members and personnel of the 1994-1995 class and see if they are interested and would support our doing this. You can call me (580-884-0132) or email me ([email protected]) or put your feedback/suggestions on our CHOO page. I will send out a list of those class members soon and would appreciate any help in contacting them. We also need the names of the faculty and staff for that class year.

I would like to thank all of those folks who helped with the Newspaper Museum clean-up on Saturday morning (9 Sep). We did accomplish a major objective in that we cleaned out the back of the building. Now, we can see what we have and how we can organize it for better use. Rhett, Jackson and I picked up Helen’s freezer and put it in there so that we can use it to store old papers, etc. Overall, a very successful morning. Thanks again to; Polly, Beverly, Cathy, Rhett, Janis, and Jackson for all of your help. sam

The CHOO met for their May meeting/workday on Saturday, 20 May. We cleaned (dusted, swept, and moved items) at the newspaper museum and the depot. Both places look very nice and are ready for the alumni meeting on Saturday, 27 May. I will have both the museum and the depot open following the alumni lunch and meeting for anyone who would like to visit them. Thanks to Cathy, Eric, Janet, Beverly, Janis, Warren, and Tony for working on the museum and depot. sam

04/13/2017

The next CHOO meeting will be held on Sunday, 23 April at 4:00 pm at the old "Carmen Home". We will also set a workday for May to work on the newspaper museum. We replaced the roof on the back of the newspaper museum with a new metal roof. It looks very good and will help to keep the room dry for storage. We also received a grant from the Alfalfa Electric Cooperative that will help us with supplies, etc. Thanks again to all of our members who responded to the membership drive and renewed or started their memberships. See any member or call Sam Wooten @ 580-884-0132 for membership details. sam

Update on Saturday’s (19 March 2016) meeting. We had a good time in Enid on Saturday with our luncheon and visit to the Oklahoma Railroad Museum. Earl & Elaine Moser, Polly Stanley, Beverly Barrows, Warren McCray, Bobbi Parker, Don Lambert and wife, and myself attended the luncheon. We had a nice lunch/meeting at Napoli’s restaurant and then six of us visited the railroad museum. If you have never visited the railroad museum in Enid, it is well worth the time to see everything there. Will get the minutes out soon. Our next meeting will be a work day at the depot on Saturday, 23 April. We need to repair/paint the shed in back of the depot and clean out the caboose. More on this later. Once again, thanks to those who were able to join us in Enid on Saturday. The meeting was productive and the day enjoyable. Our May meeting (tentatively) will be an early Sunday meeting on May 15 for us all to meet with Don Lambert at the print shop so that he can go over some history of the shop and help us identify items that we may not need there. We will plan on meeting there around 2:00 pm that day. Please put these dates on your calendar and plan to attend. sam
