Happy Birthday Bridget “Biddy” Mason! Born a slave in 1818 with no formal education, she was able to secure her family’s freedom through a court case when her master moved to California (which was admitted to the Union as a free state). After spending a decade saving her money, Biddy used her business smarts to buy and sell land at a great profit. She became known as Grandma Mason for her philanthropic work and charitable donations.
