Have you heard about the little red schoolhouses of the past? Have you wondered how one teacher could manage teaching children from grades 1-8? Did you know that Warren County had more than 100 one room school houses in the past? Have you visited the school house at the Iowa State Fair? That school building known as the North Lincoln School/Loper School was from Warren County and moved to the current site at the Fairgrounds from southeast of Indianola. If you would like to know the answers to these questions, we invite you to join the Carlisle Area Historical Society Sunday, August 30, at 2:00 for the program, “It Wasn’t Always a Little Red Schoolhouse”. The program will focus on one room schools of the decades of 1900, 1930, and 1950, when the final one room schools were consolidated. The program is free and open to the public. You might even see a dunce hat, and learn this was a real discipline strategy used (unfortunately) until the 1950’s.

With financial help from BRAVO The Carlisle Area Historical Society has been able to offer 6 entirely free educational/historical programs this year. Open to both the public and our members it makes us proud to share our beautiful headquarters, The Randleman House.
