It seeks to inspire creativity and to support the study and experience of the visual arts through direct contact with works in the Gallery’s collections and exhibitions. It serves the students, faculty and staff, and alumni of Dickinson College; the residents of the Carlisle-Central Pennsylvania area and their visitors; and the broader academic and artistic communities. It meets its objective thro

ugh its collections, exhibitions, programs, publications, and professional resources. The Trout Gallery acquires works of artistic and historic significance through gift and purchase. The collection is global in scope, with considerable holdings in works-on-paper. The collection serves as the Gallery’s fundamental cultural resource and basis for inquiry and study. The Gallery hosts exhibitions of scholarly importance drawn from its collections and those of other institutions and lenders. The exhibitions coordinate and complement the museum’s collections holdings. The Gallery’s education program provides academic support to students and faculty of Dickinson College and outreach services to Carlisle-area schools through a range of programming that advances learning in the visual arts and promotes community engagement. The Gallery produces original, academically rigorous publications that document and interpret the museum’s collections, exhibitions, and symposia, provide research opportunities for Dickinson students, promote the museum internationally, and engage the museum and the college with a global community of scholars.

Out with the old, in with the bold 🇺🇸

Our Summer Research Intern Juniper Bates is (very patiently) peeling away the dotted vinyl letters from our Senior Studio Art exhibition—one tiny dot at a time—and somehow making it look fun. We’re sad to see it go…but excited for what’s next.

The gallery is shifting into red, white, and blue as we install our upcoming exhibition, "Recent Acquisitions: American Stories," part of our celebration of America at 250. 🇺🇸✨

Think big ideas, bold voices, and American stories—featuring works by Cindy Sherman, Maria Martinez, the Guerrilla Girls, and more.

Stay tuned…this one’s going to be good.

🎨 Behind the Scenes: Transforming the Gallery! 🌿🛠️

Swipe through for a sneak peek at the installation of our upcoming exhibition, "Branch: Trees in American Art:! https://www.troutgallery.org/projects-8

It all started with a bold choice: transforming our space with a vibrant, leafy green wall color. 💚 From there, it’s been a whirlwind of ladders, layouts, and positioning incredible works of art against that stunning backdrop.

Finally, check out the last slide: our Director Shannon Egan and Summer Research Intern Juniper Bates are hard at work, studying the sculpture "Split Strike" by artist John Ruppert to figure out the absolute perfect placement and lighting.

We are counting down the days and matching that high anticipation! To celebrate the 250th anniversary of American, this exhibition uses the majestic tree as a fascinating lens to look at our nation from entirely new, diverse, and unexpected perspectives. 🌳 🇺🇸

This exhibitions opens June 12, and its reception will happen once our students are back on campus and ready to celebrate with our annual Pizza on the Plaza semester kick-off: Friday September 4th.

This Memorial Day🇺🇲, The Trout Gallery honors the memory of the military personnel who have lost their lives in war and reflects on how art helps us remember the past.

This World War II poster from our permanent collection, “ATTACK ON ALL FRONTS,” captures the urgency of wartime messaging—compelling Americans to take up arms in every sense, whether a garden hoe, a riveter’s tool, or a gun. With space for everyone on the “front lines,” it speaks to a moment when the entire nation was called to act.

Today, we remember those who lost their lives at war and consider how images like this preserve the history and complexities of their time.

Curated? Not quite. 🖼️🥴

Behind every perfectly leveled frame and polished opening night is a camera roll full of... well, this.

We’re clearing out the archives and sharing the photos that—for very obvious reasons—did not make the official feed this year. From "mid-teaching crisis" faces to a lot of staff looking hungry and unconventional museum behavior, here is the 2025–2026 season unplugged.

Consider the curtain officially pulled back. Enjoy!

It’s a bittersweet “see you later” for our Post-Baccalaureate Fellow in Museum Education, Maddy Hull `24! 🏛️ ✨

From her sharp intellect and thoughtful approach with students to her legendary “can-do” attitude, Maddy has been an absolute star on our team. We are bursting with pride to share that she’s heading off to the University of Cambridge for graduate school to pursue archaeology. 🇬🇧🏺

We’re going to miss her immensely, but let’s be honest—if a stint at The Trout leads you straight to the halls of Cambridge, we might just be the best CV builder in the game. 😉

Maddy will be staying with us through mid-June, ensuring a smooth transition as she trains our incoming Post-Bac, Georgia Mantione `26! We are so excited to have Georgia on board for the coming year—stay tuned for her official introduction soon.

Maddy, we know you’re going to make incredible contributions to the field of archaeology. Wishing you nothing but grand adventures! 🥂🎨

Year in Review, Part 2: Spring 2026 💥🌷🎨

What. A. Semester.

Spring 2026 at The Trout Gallery was packed with student energy, creative momentum, interdisciplinary magic, and so much fun. From a spontaneous mini-exhibition curated by Emily Angelucci '24 (an alumna in graduate school for Art History at Temple University), to our Spring Art and Art History Senior Exhibitions, to Trout Study Days, was a place for making connections, celebrating achievements, and enjoying the semester together.

We loved every moment of students gathering, creating, exhibiting, studying, and finding new ways to connect across disciplines. This spring was joyful, inspiring, and full of life — exactly the kind of semester we love.

Thanks for making The Trout Gallery such a vibrant place to be! 💙
