CARLIN 'RAILROADER' BAND NAMED FOR LINEUP OF NEVADA DAY PARADE
Official word has been released by Principal Vernon Dowty that Carlin's "Railroader" band will be in the line-up of the Centennial-Admission Day parade at Carson City, Oct. 31.
This will mark the first time since 1959 that the band has taken part in the annual celebration of Nevada's statehood, and the announcement was enthusiastically received.
Though the band numbers only 42 members, most of whom have had only one year's playing experience, their music sounds well beyond the beginning stages. Last spring's festival rating of first division attested to its exuberance and grasp of fundamentals.
Director Wayne Skeem admits there will be bigger and better bands in the parade, but with a smile adds, "these kids have a genuine desire to give a creditable performance for Carlin and Elko County. By cracky, that's what we're going to do."
The musicians will be outfitted in new red slip-over sweaters, carrying a white and blue letter on the front.
They will be wearing legitimate railroader caps and neckerchiefs, and some of their music will have a "Down by the Station" theme.

My apologies to everyone about the article that was posted yesterday. I failed to include the date so I didn't mean to confuse people! I will repost the article shortly, but it was published in the Elko Daily Free Press on October 3, 1964. Here is a picture of the band from the 1964 CHS Headlight Yearbook.

Arrested for Killing Fish.
The Elko Free Press says that Constable Cozzens of Carlin arrested a man named Barney O'Rook on a charge of killing fish in the Humboldt river with giant powder. The officers are determined to put a stop to the wholesale destruction of fish with giant powder—which has been carried on for some time in different parts of this county—and the sooner the guilty parties are detected and brought to justice, the better.

Silver State, October 2, 1895

On account of not being able to procure a jury at Carlin in the dynamite fishing cases, the cases were dismissed on motion of the district attorney, says the Independent. The parties will be rearrested and tried before Justice Henley at Elko.
