🎂🎉 Happy Birthday to America's original First Lady, Martha Washington! Did you know Martha was known for her incredible hospitality and played a vital role in supporting the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War?

Born on this day in 1731 at Chesnut Grove Plantation in New Kent County, Virginia, Martha Dandridge was the eldest child of John Dandriddge and Frances Jones. Educated in an informal manner that was appropriate for the time, she was trained at home in music, sewing, and household management. She is also believed to have been taught in plantation management, homeopathic medicine, crop sales, and animal husbandry. Prior to her marriage with George Washington, Martha Dandridge married a wealthy plantation owner and enslaver, Daniel Parke Custis when she was 19 years old. Together, the two had four children together, although two died young. When her first husband also died, Martha Custis was left a wealthy widow, which would later give prominence and wealth to her second husband, George Washington. When she became First Lady of the United States, she set forth important precedents for the role and society in the new nation. Always supportive of her husband, Martha Washington e joined him at various winter encampments, including Valley Forge, where she organized efforts to support the troops by sewing garments and raising funds for supplies. Her dedication earned her the admiration of the soldiers, who affectionately referred to her as "Lady Washington."

As the first First Lady, Martha Washington was forever commemorated alongside her husband in various forms. Her patience, steadiness, optimism, and loyalty were held up as ideal virtues. Martha Washington was the first historical woman figure to be depicted by the federal government on postage stamps and currency. Her life and contributions continue to be celebrated as integral to the early history of the United States.

Let's celebrate her legacy today!

🎂✨ Happy Birthday to Helen "Nellie" Taft, the First Lady who brought the beautiful cherry blossoms to Washington, D.C.! Her efforts to beautify the nation's capital still bring joy to millions every spring. 🌸🌸

One of seven first ladies to call Ohio home, Helen Taft was born on this day in 1861 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The fifth of ten children, Helen Herron was well-educated and enjoyed wordly discussions. She was especially interested in politics and economics alongside her lifelong love of music. She later became a teacher in various schools in the Cincinnati area and in the winter of 1877, visited her family friends, the Hayes' at the White House in Washington D.C. During her visit to the presidential home, Helen Herron's interest in being First Lady of the United States was sparked. When she later married William Howard Taft, an up and coming lawyer, it seemed destined for the couple to do great things. The two were known as a very social couple, hosting salons in which they discussed literature, the arts, and history. Following their marriage, Helen "Nellie" Taft continued teaching in the new kindergarten movement, but because she was married, taught for free. She strongly urged her husband to accept the role of Governor-General for the Phillipines and readily moved the whole family there once he did so. Later, when she became First Lady of the United States, Nellie Taft was responsible for bringing arts and culture to Washington society in a new way, and her creation of a bandstand among the cherry blossom trees still exists to this day.

Today, we honor this progressive First Lady who not only beautified Washington D.C., but who also advocated for those who could not always speak up for themselves including women and factory workers.
