For Memorial Day in 1897, First Lady Ida McKinley sent flowers to be placed on the graves of Canton soldiers. The first known Memorial Day commemoration took place on May 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC. At a former planters’ racetrack, Confederates held captured Union soldiers during the last year of the Civil War. At least 257 prisoners died, many of disease, and were buried in unmarked graves, so Black residents of Charleston decided to give them a proper burial.

A little Then & Now on this soggy spring Sunday in May. Have you ever taken the opportunity to attend a show or event in Centennial Plaza in downtown Canton, Ohio? While facing that captivating LED video screen or enjoying a live performance, take a moment to look over your right shoulder and across 4th Street to see the United Way Building in the next block. Now this building is also known as the 401 Market Building where the United Way of Greater Stark County is based and the downtown location for the Visit Canton Welcome Center. Then this building was the home of the Gaskell Art & China Shop at 429 4th Street N.W. Silas and Esther (Danner) Gaskell were the owners of this very unique atelier or workshop. Mrs. Gaskell created treasures in her pottery studio in the basement where she would let her children, Ilka and Danner, take the bisqued pieces out of the kiln, but she was the only one who knew how to “pack” it. Mr. Gaskell managed employees, kept the books and waited on trade on the street level. We believe this is Silas Gaskell waiting in front of his 4th Street shoppe to help the next neighbor of Canton pick out her China pattern.
