Today is National Fossil Day!

National Fossil Day celebrates the scientific and educational importance of paleontology and the need to preserve fossils for future generations.

Did you know that the Royal Gorge Region has a rich paleontological history?

These local sauropod fossil bones are on display at the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center. They were discovered in 2022, but were millions of years in the making! They are just one of the many amazing fossil discoveries right here in our own backyard.

Want to learn more? Come explore these fossils plus many more at the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center. We are a free museum and open to the public Wednesdays – Saturdays, 10:00am-4:00pm.

The Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center will be closed on Saturday, October 17, 2026 to participate in the Colorado 150/U.S. 250 Fremont County History Tavern Crawl program.

Hop on your bike and discover a different side of Cañon City’s history. As we ride through a local residential neighborhood, we’ll explore the people, places, and everyday stories that shaped the community.

This program is free and open to the public, welcoming both residents and visitors. Participants must be at least 12 years of age, provide their own bicycle and safety equipment, and be able to bike a/o stand for 1.5 hours.

Note: We will be riding along roadways.

Don't forget today is the museum's special open house at the Catlin Cabin and the Rudd Cabin. We have tons of fun activities for families including roping demonstrations, weaving demonstrations, and Civil War drill demonstrations. Help us celebrate our state's 150th with good old fashioned pioneer fun!

We have been looking at the radar for later this afternoon and early evening. It looks like we are going to get some thunderstorms rolling in right in the middle of our tour. Just to be on the safe side, we have decided to reschedule the bike tour to this coming Saturday, July 25th at 8:30am.

All participants who have registered already won’t have to register again. You can just arrive at the location provided in the confirmation email at the new day and time.
