40 Years of Painting: Part I. This part of the exhibition goes from the first group of paintings (watercolors) that I exhibited publicly in 1982. One was even chosen for the collection of the Hoyt Institute near Pittsburgh.
Also included are the prints and Monotypes that were the basis of my Thesis Exhibition from the University of Delaware which was the first show in the new Waterworks space of the DCCA (now Delaware Contemporary) in 1984. Making these monotypes was one of the most intense periods of work I've experienced, most of the images are in multiple variations, working the ghost images on the plates. There are about 50 of them. None of the ten large oil paintings which were part of the show still exist.
In 1986 I moved to Chicago for two years while Noreen went to graduate school at the Art Institute of Chicago. I worked as an illustrator at a soft goods company. While there I began paintings that would constitute part of my next major showing of work. When we returned to the east coast in 1988, I signed up for a class back at UD for studio space. While there I had a crit with a visiting NYC critic, who hated what I was doing. I had great respect for this critic's writing, and took it all very much to heart, and began to paint abstractions for the next several years. Included here a few of what is left of that body of work. In the end, I learned to hold my own council, rejected his criticism, and returned to those earlier paintings. (Which will be included in Part II)
Rounding out this first part I'm showing a small group of my illustration works. I worked as a graphic designer, and illustrator between 1983 and 2005. I decided to just cover a wall salon style with the painted work which begins with a couple of things I did in a class with Jerry Pinkney at UD in 1990.
Many Thanks to Professors, Robert Straight, Stephen Tanis, Larry Holmes (RIP), Rosemary Lane, and Jerry Pinkney (RIP), and my illustration representative, Deborah Wolfe.
