Did you know?

The 1950 Savings Bonds Independence Drive was a massive national campaign organized by the U.S. Treasury Department to encourage Americans to buy U.S. Savings Bonds.

The U.S. Treasury commissioned 55 official full-size replicas of the Liberty Bell (one for each state, territory, and Washington D.C.). They were cast by the historic Paccard Foundry in Annecy-le-Vieux, France. Craftsmen carefully measured the original Liberty Bell in Philadelphia to ensure the replicas matched the precise dimensions, markings, and acoustic tone. Each bell was assigned a unique number; Idaho received Bell #22. The cost of the bells was completely paid for by prominent American copper and mining companies, including the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and Kennecott Copper Corporation.

Idaho’s bell officially arrived in the state on May 28, 1950.

To promote the bond drive, the bell toured across Idaho communities on the back of a custom 1950 Ford R-5 flatbed truck equipped with loud speakers. The national campaign window ran from May 15 to July 4, 1950. During its local stretch, Idaho's caravan traveled extensively to smaller farming communities, logging towns, and cities to generate civic enthusiasm.
