Behind the scenes: the making of our free Fall 2024 U.S. Citizenship Course!

This summer, Emily Feng ’25 and Ricardo Fernandes Garcia ’27, two Harvard students in the Summer Humanities and Arts Research Program, led a project to revise the course, with supervision from museum staff. Significantly, their research included a trip to meet with staff of the Citizenship Project at the New-York Historical Society and the Shared Journeys workshops at the Tenement Museum, two of New York’s most distinguished museum-based programs for aspiring U.S. citizens and immigrant language learners.

As a result of their efforts, the course, which prepares aspiring U.S. citizens for the USCIS naturalization test, is better than ever! We have condensed the course to 8 weeks (down from 10), given more time to art and conversation, and created more opportunities for the students to connect with the museums, the teachers, and their fellow students.

The course meets every Saturday from September 21 through November 9 at 10:30am-12:30pm. Space is limited to 18 spots and registration is required. To register, please complete the registration form (https://site.corsizio.com/event/66ae369dc492f0e6f5d4963f) by September 14.

Hello Harvard students! The Ho Family Student Guide Program is hiring!

This is a paid position, open to Harvard College sophomores and juniors (with the opportunity to stay on the team through senior year). The program prepares Student Guides to create and lead original, research-based tours of the museums for the public, and other audiences by request. Taking place in person and occasionally online, the tours approach the museums via a theme of the guides’ own choosing, sample the variety and diversity of the collections, and engage visitors in conversation. Additionally, Student Guides support other museum-based education programs, most notably our free, 10-week U.S. Citizenship Course, which prepares aspiring U.S. citizens for the Naturalization Test through special tours of the American collections. No art history, studio art, or museum experience necessary!

You can find the full application through the SEO job site (ID 20286). Applications close on 9/12/23. We can’t wait to see your applications!

Please join Brandon Calderón tonight, Thursday, 9/22 at 8pm ET, for a virtual student guide tour in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month!

Brandon will explore how Hispanic art emerged from a mixture of violent Spanish colonization and the resistance of Indigenous traditions and testimony. Starting with Indigenous pottery from the Moche civilization of ancient Peru and ending with a 17th-century carved crucifix likely from the colonial Spanish Philippines, Brandon will stress the agency of “New World artists” and how they worked within and against the Spanish Empire.

This interactive tour will take place online via Zoom. To join, click the following link: https://harvard.zoom.us/j/97806174187 (free admission; no pre-registration required).

It was a special day in the Art Study Center. Harvard Art Museums organized a tour for Hispanic Heritage Month, featuring works by artists from Latin America and the diaspora, including Frank Espada, Ana Mendieta, and Enrique Chagoya. It was attended and commissioned by members of Fuerza Latina (), the largest social organization for Latinx students at Harvard College. They discussed the works along with Student Guide Felipe Muñoz and Curatorial Fellow Natalia Ángeles Vieyra, who had selected the works on display.
