A window into the history of healthcare in Calico Rock…

This special display brings together treasured pieces from our community’s medical past: Dr. Meryl Grasse’s lab coat, surgical cap and mask; a Pink Lady uniform; old medicine containers; a surgical stand with instruments; a fetoscope; photographs of the Little White House and several of the nurses; and a copy of a check believed to have helped fund renovation work.

At the heart of the window is a quilt made by hospital staff in the 1980s as a wedding gift for Jody Schlosser-a beautiful reminder that the hospital was not only a place of healing, but also a community of people who worked, cared and celebrated life together.

We are deeply grateful to Claire Cresto and Cathy Ward for bringing this window to life. Cathy gathered many of the historical items and contributed her knowledge and design skills, while Claire lent her creative eye to the display. Together, they created a meaningful window into Calico Rock’s medical history.

Home is more than a place-it is a feeling held in the heart.

Here at the Calico Rock Museum & Visitor Center, that feeling lives in the stories we preserve, the memories we share, and the people who walk through our doors. Whether you have lived here all your life, returned for a visit, or are simply passing through… we hope you catch a little of the feeling of home that lives here and carry a piece of Calico Rock with you when you go.

A special thank-you to Sherri Ohnemus for the beautiful “I ❤️ Calico Rock” sign. It is a perfect reflection of how so many of us feel about this place we call home.

When visitors step into the museum, one of the places they linger longest is right here-among the faces of our Pioneers Gallery. For those who grew up in Calico Rock, this wall feels like coming home. It’s a gathering of neighbors, friends, and family who built the foundation of our community.

Each photograph tells a story. Some are of hardworking hands, some of bright smiles, some of quiet determination. Together, they weave the fabric of who we are. They remind us that while time moves forward, the legacy of those who came before us still shapes our present.

This gallery has become a favorite for returning families and visitors with roots here-many find the faces of loved ones, classmates, or even ancestors among these walls. It’s more than history; it’s connection.

We extend our deepest thanks to all who contributed these treasured photographs. Your gifts ensure that the stories, struggles, and triumphs of our people will not be forgotten. They live on here, preserved for future generations to see, remember, and celebrate.

This gallery stands as a tribute to the souls who made Calico Rock what it is today..a community bound by memory, resilience, and love.

There are few things more meaningful to us than hearing from the people who walk through our doors.

These are just a sampling of the comments left by our visitors during the month of August, and reading them is both humbling and incredibly encouraging. Every kind word reminds us why we do what we do-to preserve our history, celebrate our culture and art, and create a place where people can discover something they did not expect to find.

To every person who visited, explored our exhibits, talked with our artists, shared a memory, or simply took the time to leave us a few words…thank you. Your encouragement means more to our entire museum family than you may ever know.

We are grateful for every visitor who becomes a small part of the story of the Calico Rock Museum & Visitor Center.

With gratitude,

Never underestimate the lasting value of the treasures entrusted to our museum. What may begin as a single donation becomes something so much greater-a piece of our shared history preserved, displayed, and enjoyed by visitors year after year.

These are the contributions that truly keep on giving… allowing stories, memories, and pieces of the past to remain part of our community for generations to come. We are so grateful to those who have trusted us to care for them.

Artifact Spotlight: Calico Rock School Desk

This desk once sat inside the old Calico Rock School building, a place filled with the voices and memories of generations of students. After the school was torn down, the desk was passed into the care of Jane Smith, who later gave it to her pastor, Brother Jess Sumrall.

From Jess-the desk was gifted to Aaron Teague, who lovingly restored it-carefully taking it apart, cleaning, repainting, and putting it back together piece by piece. His restoration included the bright orange "CR" emblem, honoring Calico Rock's school spirit.

Now donated to the Calico Rock Museum & Visitor Center, this desk stands as both a preserved treasure and a tribute to the many hands and hearts that kept it safe over the years.

It reminds us of the importance of education, community, and the care it takes to pass history along to the next generation.

A special thank you to Aaron Teague for his dedication to ensuring this piece of Calico Rock's story will be remembered and cherished.
