When settlers reached the Western Reserve, they weren’t picking spots at random — they were reading the land. 🌲 They looked for three things, and our corner of Ohio had all of them:
💧 Water — clear springs and creeks to drink from and power a mill.
🪵 Wood — endless straight timber to raise a cabin and split a fence.
🪨 Stone — solid rock for a hearth, a chimney, a foundation.

Century Village Museum is casting for Little Women: A Victorian Christmas, and you don’t need years of theater experience to audition.

🔎 Ever wonder why it’s called the Western Reserve? 👀

After the Revolution, Connecticut gave up most of its western land claims — but “reserved” one strip for itself, stretching all the way out to Northeast Ohio. They even called it “New Connecticut” at first.

🗺️ On September 2, 1795, the Connecticut Land Company bought this whole tract — about 3 million acres, Geauga County included — for $1.2 million. That’s roughly 40 cents an acre. 😮 Surveyors fanned out, drew the townships, and the first settlers began carving farms out of the forest. (Fun twist: Connecticut spent the money on its schools!)
