HERE LIES SAM HUNT: The Santa Fe Trail ran through the main street of Burlingame, which was founded in the year Kansas became a territory. Fifteen years later, the AT&SF Railroad to intersect with the trail, but by that time another railroad had built farther west across the state and trail traffic here was primarily local. A few miles west of town, the remnants of a stage station marks all that remains of a town called Havana. Across the road lies the grave of Private Samuel Hunt, buried here in 1835 as his troop of dragoons returned to Fort Leavenworth. (Note: We've since learned that there IS a cemetery near the site of Havana with about half a dozen unmarked graves and one gravestone.)

You probably haven’t heard of her, but Aunt Emily Ford was one of the most beloved citizens of Burlingame, Kansas. At a time when prejudice and segregation ran rampant throughout most of the country, the color line however did not exist for Aunt Emily in her adopted community, and she held a special place of honor and respect there.
