Morning wonderfully clear and fresh. Cold wind. Beauty of windblown trees—white undersides. The blue in the air. A pair of blue birds.

The bobolinks. Even in describing their song, the wind mingles the notes with the blue haze and sunshine and gathers dandelion seeds, sorrel pollen and scent of wild cherry bloom.

Down in roadside hollow. Seclusion and charm. Odor of ferns, rotting wood and mossy water. An ideal streambed of solid rock. An old piece of tin becomes a thing of beauty with the ripples reflections running over it. And espiecially are ripple reflections beautiful as revealed through translucent jewelweed. Beauty of water dripping moss.

June!

And I will let that exclamation mark tell it all – for now.

Morning was a surprise to me; yesterday was cool and clear, rain was the last thing I would think of, and yet when I awoke this morning, the pleasant sound of rainfall greeted me. A fine type of weather to usher in June, some might suggest. But when we consider that June is but a part of a season of new life, what could be more appropriate than a gentle life-giving shower?

Rain ceased early in the day, and morning was one of loose ragged clouds and moist breeze. Dark clouds amased frequently against which the white edged trees stood out in fine contrast. The rain seemed to have revived the oriole, who sang more frequently and volubly than I have heard them since arriving home.

Afternoon brought a clearing of the sky; the sun came out and shone hotly; the breeze was brisk and cool. A yellowbird sang; and even a robin was not to be outdone, for he sang loudly and strong. The wren was not around all day long.

The robins in the spout left today; whither I have no idea. How quickly they mature!

A letter came from C – which was the first I had heard for some time for him- I spent the afternoon pleasantly in answering it.

Burchfield bracketed the following in red pencil.

Heaven is an inexplicable thing — It occurs seemingly without reason and at unexpected moments — Heaven inspired by feelings of virtuous living is a poverty-stricken substitute for the reality — The most “immoral” being may experience the sublime oftener than the morally correct mediocre mind —
I was sketching near roaring rapids today and by chance held my pad vertical — and at once a fine rattling sound issued from it, seeming like wind in dry grass; nor did it come if I inclined it the one way or the other. It was probably a “catch-place” for the sound of the rapids —
I became the mental wanderer again today — I traveled far —

Trip to Ohio – May 29-31, 1926 –

Sitting in Train looking out over hills – passing Conneautt – memories of May & June in Cleveland at the art school – of my trip over to Con – with John Lloyd – the horror of that place – the gallery east of Ashtabula – try to recall what a boyhood there would mean – arrival in Youngstown – no one to meet me – bitter disappointment – on Y & S to Leetonia – when arrive at Leetonia oldme the damp evening brings old memories of June nights of the S. E. Ohio country – a peculiar feeling to the damp mystery of the creek & river turns not around Buffalo—

Arrival home – find mother in bed & strangely apathetic – not because she was not glad to see me, but from tiredness – it filled me with sadness so that I could scarcely speak.—

Next a.m. out to K’s to see my family & how small the children looked to me – how glad to hold them & Bertha close—

Maytime on the farm – the freshness & greenness – the feeling of remoteness & mystical feeling of being near to the Creator—

The evening of return – great physical weariness combined with great depression – in Youngstown – the great “converter” belching white hot fluid – seemed humble & the garish red glare on the crude buildings betrayed me; the might became sinister when the thought of leaving my family behind me.

May 28, Tuesday –

A warm humid day – at dawn sunlight streaming across the earth, but before light, clouded sky, and a heavy shower – Bertha slept late, so I put in the time writing letters.
I did not expect the men to come to move the shed, but the rain ceased, and they were soon at work –

A.M. – put away the pictures that I had out yesterday – got out the “Lilacs #2” (it must have a new name) with the thought that prove the material

[in the midst of this writing for May 28th, Burchfield inserts the following text}:

A- May 27 – I keep thinking of those boys and girls – and of the impermanent nature of their being – the time will come when they will vanish altogether (they will become adults) – What they are now is so fragile – so easy to rub out – whoever has looked into the eyes of a child and seen dthere, trust and admiration – yes perhaps love, has a treasure he can carry in his memory all his life.

for a small sketch (with some color) It has never been satisfactory. But as soon as I sit it on the easel I saw at once what it needed – It was too “all-over” in its interest, the trees were too combined with false foliage, etc. – What it needed was an abstract treatment first, then to be brought backward to a conventionalized reality –

I was bothered a little by the presence of the men working right outside the window, but was pretty successful in putting them out of my mind –

The work went pretty well – when I brought it in and set it up on the hi-fi, Bertha thought that I had at least solved it.

Evening - the Kabalevsky, Prokofiev, Dvorak record – It recalls so vividly the 1953 June when I was working on the drawings show for the Cleveland Print Club – For that reason the music seems fraught with nostalgia verging on sadness – a climactic period in my life, when some things went out of it forever.
