Happy first day of (meteorological) summer, WNY! ☀️☀️☀️

Meteorologists break the seasons up equally throughout the year to track weather and climate patterns more accurately year to year, since the solstices and equinoxes fall on different days and times each year. Here's what the meteorological calendar looks like:

🌷Spring: March 1
☀️Summer: June 1
🍂Fall: September 1
❄️Winter: December 1

Astronomical summer (summer solstice) starts on June 21 at 4:24 a.m.

Check out this newly digitized photo of the Museum from over 90 years ago! 😲

📸The original photo was snapped in 1934 at the Museum as crews unloaded exhibit materials the Museum acquired from the Century of Progress Exhibition after it closed in Chicago. We’re excited to announce that it is one of 1,200 images in our historical negative collection that have now been digitized thanks to funding under an Access and Innovation Grant—a member grant awarded to the Museum by the Western New York Library Resources Council - WNYLRC.

We’ll be adding more of these sneak peeks into our history on the New York Heritage Digital Collection’s website throughout the year: https://nyheritage.org/collections/hidden-views-salvaging-historic-images-buffalo-society-natural-sciences

If you were lucky enough to catch it on camera, we'd love to see it! Message us your videos and we'll share them on our pages (with credit) 🎥

*PERMUTATION (noun): an ordered arrangement of a set of objects, or the act of changing the order of a set of objects.*

🤓 Turns out there's a ton of math and science both on and off the field in the world of sports! The NFL's rules for schedule making mean that each team's regular season schedule has AT LEAST 2.85 QUADRILLION—that's 15 zeroes 🤯—permutations. The basic formula looks like this: 17! x 8.

Here's why:
🏈 17 games played = 17 possible matchups for each week: so you multiply 17 x 16 x 15... and so on all the way to 1
🏈 8 possible weeks in which there could be a bye, so multiply that huge number by 8

Let’s talk about owl vomit... in the most wholesome way possible.

Owl pellets are basically the OG “surprise toy,” except instead of something plastic that you'll put away and never think about again, you’ll find tiny bones, fur, and clues about an owl’s dinner menu.

Check out our Family Workshop: Owl Pellet Dissection on May 9 and become wildlife detectives as we safely dissect pellets and discover what owls have been snacking on.

Gross? A little.
Fun? Absolutely, and the kids will love it!
